Talked to my friend Dave (Scott's workmate) tonight and can offer this update.
Cozzy is still heavily sedated and as Largo said, they're trying to slowly bring him up.
He opened his eyes briefly but he's still a long ways away.
Apparently the swelling on his face is pretty much down and "he looks just like Coz again".
All the major orthopedic work is done except for his right arm and wrist and the're going to do that soon.
Although there's cautious optimism about his brain function, "he's not out of the woods yet".
His family thinks it's still too soon for visitors but will give us the word as soon as possible.
He faces a long recovery and while we all believe in his strength, the future remains uncertain and he's going to need our support.
Positive thoughts and best wishes for a righteous Coz.

Don't forget that aside from a traumatic brain injury, Cos sufered some very grave compound (open) fractures, including both tib/fib of lower leg and a compound femur. And an open fracture above his right wrist (plus a terribly fracrturd wrist) that is still awaiting repairs because the house guy wouldn't touch it. And that's not to mention all the work done rebuilding his grill. Any of those ortho injuries would be enough to keep a good man or woman down for a solid year, if not more.

So our friend is bad off indeed, so we need to check our expectations.

I am looking for an update everyday, waiting for news about your progress.

I will be looking a year from now, when this thread won't on page 1. From life expereinces, it stays hard as people move on to the latest issues and see that you are going to live.

He will need support for a long time. He won't ask for it. A little reminder to his best friends to keep him in your life when he won't be lurking in the usual places. The isolation from the people and places you love can hurt as much as the accident. Look at all the ex-athletes who "retire" and then struggle when their life has altered so much, the routine and social scene so different.

Thanks for the reality check, JL. Seamstress, I agree. Have experienced having friends (friends?) go on without me when my life changed. Scott will need to be front and center with everyone, even if he can't keep up at first.

very wise, and well said...
i try to share, on 'awareness' months, about head injury issues and such...

but it holds true, as to any injuries that keep one out of the main stream:

IF you don't have a good circle of 'functioning love' friends,
the injured DO get left along the way-side...

starting a whole new path, without your 'usual folks around' is very very empty and strange, and enough to make one feel forgotten... :(

FOR SCOTT:

say, scott... climber folks, here, well knit, and long knowing, as to being your friends, ARE here... some may have to be busy, due to work and family, but MANY MANY are 'open trail' and
REACH out and let them know when you are ready for company...

and:
company will come... >:D<

for largo, as to your quote:

hey there say, john... this is very well needed, good post...
the general public, really has no idea... thank you for sharing:

While we cannot know what the future holds, it is unrealistic to think once the fog wears off, Scott will sit up and start talking. Rather he will likely have to fight his way back into consciousness and self awareness by way of a long rehab.

If there is any good news here, it's that people can and routinely do return from traumatic brain injuries. But it takes time. And our friend took one hell of a blow to the front of his head.

Cos suffered some very grave compound (open) fractures

This so painful to read.

Coz was such a great guy to me and our many crazy times together while he lived in Yosemite.

The guy never ceased to make me laugh every day.

Now he's all broken and in serious pain.

Hideous .....

He may be broken right now, but what makes Coz...Coz, is in his DNA. He will recover...hopefully up to the 100% mark. It will take a long time as he took a serious grounder. The key is not to forget HIM 2yrs from now when the healing and resuming of normal life will be in full effect. I don't know the man but I hope to be in his hood sometime in the near future. A short visit from a friendly rando. Drop off some home cooked meals, take out the trash, whatever is needed. Of course..talk some shet about climbing.

In the meantime, sending good vibes Coz!!
Mike

Very well said. Let's also not forget that he may be out of work for a while too. He may need a lot of support.

Keep us posted Largo, Chief, and everybody else.

A great idea was put forward for communicating our support for Coz.
Most of us have smart phones now and we can send Coz videos.
Ms. Chief and I made a couple in El Cap Meadows yesterday with Middle and El Cap as backgrounds.
The challenge will be not clogging Cozzy's phone with video files.
Would it be possible to do something here on ST?
Maybe someone could help us organize posting get well videos in a way that Coz can go through them easily as often as he wants.
Throwing it out there.

hey there say, ... for scotts sister and family:
if they can read this, or someone can share:

i been thinking about scott, as to this 'waking up and thrashing about'...
and it makes me sad, for him... :(

i was wondering, if there may be something, or some way to help soothe him, as the sedation wears off...

i mean:
many times after brain injury, i know, folks do not remember what happened, as to accidents, etc... (later, some folks even think, they are fine--it is a tricky, thing, the brain)...

BUT IN some cases, the brain does remember, and even deeper, like subconsciously, as to reaction...

so what i am wondering, if this:

could it be that as he wakes up, the fall shock of falling could be playing through his mind, and if someone is there, perhaps to soothe with words, such as:

we got you... we GOT you know... relax, your's safe now...
we 'caught you'... etc etc...

COULD??? this help him through that... ????
perhaps, one could try????

or, perhaps, he is just FEELING stuck:

that as we all know, can cause a 'panic', and more-so, if one is all druggy... perhaps someone, an intimate team, family, etc,

can try a 'ten times say it' --to make a NEW BRAIN THOUGHT...
to grow as to habit, saying:

hang on, relax, we are fixing you up...
relax, bones are mending, that's why your stuck...

i don't know, just something...
brain really LIKE something to ANCHOR onto...
it is really important and:

the 'say it ten times' etc... well, you know...
or make it into a SOOTHING song...

it soothes, babies, as they learn TO TRUST...

and it also, teaches new lessons...
(you know, one two buckle my shoe, etc, like sesame street
stuff, as to brain repetition... )

praying for AN ANCHOR,for scott...

edit:
oh my, a friend and i were talking today, about brain injuries, and it reminded me:
i neglected to add:
sometimes, too, seizures can be causing someone to
thrash, when they wake up from sedation as well,
it would all depend on the nature of injuries, etc, but i
would think doctors would know then, as they are watching
to see what is going on at these times...

so i was just addressing, 'in general'

sure hope it is not anything serious, as they
try to wake him up... :(

That's a great suggestion Neebee. It's well documented now that many people in a coma or under anesthesia do hear what's being said and remember it afterwards. Positive reinforcement is really important!
