Fair enough Moose, I don't consider him a hero, but a principled man that I don't agree with. tRump picking on McCain after he has been dead for 7 months is just another example of how small, weak and insecure he is as man.

@Apogee: Is there a tipping point for dems? Trump won quite a few who traditionally voted dem. I don't see anything Trump has done that's different from what he's always been. Too many commentators here forget that come election day, it's a binary choice--warts and all. If one candidate seems to support more of your issues/points of view than the other, that one wins. The continual demonizing of Trump voters serves to--understandably--redouble their commitment. I see the broad brush attacks--Trump voters are all racist morons!--and I think: Wow, folks who say this really want to see him re-elected. I know some Trump voters, and they aren't racists, and they're not stupid. On election day they had two choices, and one was more aligned--even if poorly--with their beliefs than the other. Of course, there are plenty of hard lefts and rights who vote for whomever gets propped up there, and there's no swaying them. It's the mushy middle that needs attention. You want a dem in office? Start respecting the concerns of half the population and avoid coming out as a socialist--one of the least favorite qualities. From a recent NBC News/WSJ poll:

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal public opinion survey tested 11 different presidential characteristics among registered voters nationwide. The most widely accepted – being an African American (87 percent said they were "enthusiastic" or "comfortable" with that characteristic), a white man (86 percent), a woman (84 percent), and gay or lesbian (68 percent).

The least popular characteristics? Being over the age of 75 (37 percent) and a socialist (25 percent).

Sanders – at 77 – is the oldest declared or potential presidential candidate in the 2020 field. And he’s been repeatedly labeled by Republicans as a socialist.

I think Bernie is way more socialisty than he would like the American public to believe. He's been a big fan of Hugo Chavez, for example. Anyway, this is going to be a VERY interesting election. The outrageous size of the dem field will require some prodigious in-fighting and back stabbing to cut it down to size. Should be juicy.

The Bernie Bros are going to be a problem. I was saying in 2016 the Ds should throw him overboard. Your periodic reminder he is an Independent. He is not a D.

Imagine the optics of him campaigning with AOC Omar and Tlaib. If you are in a mindset that you want to be all the way Left you will need to support that ticket.

MTA I was surprised as well. When Warren entered I assumed she and Bernie had worked it out and she would be his proxy.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who does active service in our military is a hero...let alone someone who is captured, kept in a POW camp for 6 years, and subjected to physical torture that leaves you permanently, physically damaged.

McCain's actions in public service are another matter, altogether. Still, as stahlbro said, he was a principled man who I often disagreed with his actions.

It's crazy that it is sucking all of the O2 from the other issues like the Golan Heights recognition.

I agree. It's not about politics, it's about pettiness.

I see the value of having strong leftward views and voices, as long as everyone operates from the same bottom reality of the 'binary system' that we are saddled with. When it comes down to the vote, staying home and pouting because your extreme left candidate isn't on the ballot is being simply childish.

Edit
And a candidate that carries a significant amount of the far left planks in their platform is a recipe for complete failure.

If you believe this, it looks like trump is a one termer
Granted, things change, but. . . . . .

I am not one of those that think the state of the economy is a major factor.
One's economic standing is determined by personal decisions, imo.
I stayed employed during the downturn some ten years ago, as well as the downturn in the early nineties.

Plenty of valid reasons for supporting Trump. It's not all about racism and xenophobia.

agreed

on election day 2008 the Republican economy was losing 500,000 jobs a month,
we were in the worst recession since the 1930's and the stock market fell 50%
and the worst foreign policy mistake in US history, the Iraq invasion sold on a lie.....

yet some 60,000 million people voted for the Republican candidate anyway

Norton didn't get the update that we aren't supposed to speak ill of John McCain. He was a war hero.

Sure, there have been exceptions, but as a general matter of fact, a generally positive economy has favored the incumbent.

This incumbent, however, is so far out of the box, almost anything could still happen. His propensity for yakking could sink him, as could any number of scandals or investigations...an opponent with reasonable likability could take him down, even with a good economy. That would be sweet justice.

He’s (deservedly) hated to a degree I’ve never before seen, and is down to his base for support. Hatred is a great motivator for voters in opposition.

He has no margin for error.
