None of us can imagine our lives without our four footed friends, and yet, by the design of nature, it almost always happens that they leave us.
Thankfully we have other things to look forward to, to distract us, and the capacity to handle our grief. Imagine how confusing it must be for a dog to have their entire world gone in a heartbeat if we were to leave them suddenly.
This is one particular animal that holds my utmost regard, short of humans.
And if I had to choose between humans and a dog to be stranded on a desert island alone with, well, umm, the humans better bring a resume! Unless they look like either Ginger or Mary Ann.

The Muir story made me think of:
As a kid growing up on the ocean in New England I was told many old stories of fisherman being rescued from peril by a dog. You do not see it much any more but when I was a kid it was common that at my local town wharf three out of every five local fisherman's trucks would have a large (most often black) dog in the bed. These dogs would often be Newfoundland or big Black Labs. They would sit calmly no matter the time of year, heat of summer or dead cold of winter, all day long waiting for their master's return. In the meantime they would lounge and seem almost catatonic. But the second their master's boat came into view at the harbour mouth they became total awareness.
A common story over the years:
The lobsterman or inshore fisherman comes into harbour. Pulling along side his skiff/mooring, he takes the mooring painter and walks out on the foredeck and zing, didn't realize it was icy. Or for whatever reason winds up going in the drink and weighs to much wet to get himself back into the skiff let alone the fishing boat. To far of a swim to shore for the old fisherman and time of the essence. Waisting no time the 'Newfy' seeing his master in peril bails out of the truck, down the gang plank and right off the end of the float into the icy water and rescues his master. Usually in the middle of winter, in the back of a harbour things are pretty quiet and there is not a lot of people around to observe goings on. But when a massive Newfy is huffing and puffing, making a beeline across winter harbour waters all of a sudden a people take notice.

We once had a dog so fierce, he made four drunks climb on top of their car. We were glad to see that!
Our current dogs aren't so fierce and wouldn't save us from drowning. Cute though.

"A freakin' barn owl sitting on a buncha dogs and rabbits? If anything was cuter than a basket of bunnies (wait, there's one of them as well). .........DAMMIT THAT IS CUTE!!!!!! How can you usurp the Choti cuteness"
Caylor--you made me geyser grape juice through my nose-- tank-oo-berry-muts!
Yeah, I read Jasmine's Story and got a little teary-eyed...not so much because she was abused (which is really horrible), but that she recovered from it and went on to display such unconditional love to everything that came her way.

Ran across this photo of Burton from 8/08 the other day. He just turned 12.
The haircut and pose crack me up.
You should have seen the caliper.

Ah, I saw your picture and thought "Somebody ought to climb that!"
But I suppose that's why you were there.
