Piton_Ron,
looks similar to my table set up about 2 miles north of the
Ponderosa traveled on the 1'st dirt road towards kernville
headed towards the Needles. Good camping there also
outside the so often full campgrounds.
My 223's and 7.62*39 I did not worry about in the mud or dirt.
My Winchester 22.250 however was high quality and extremely
accurate at around 3800 mfs. Max loads 4000 mfs+ are not as
accurate. Of course I loaded my own.
I need to get back there again for White Punks on Dope.

You're making me realize I need to make a range trip in the near future. I got a rem 700 223 varmint rig for a pretty good deal at the local gun shop, after tripping the tasco target scope on flea bay, I had all of $300 into the rifle. Ok, I did spend a bit over $400 for the leupold vx-III 3.5-10 w/ target turrets and mildot reticle. I loaded up a few hundred rounds and need to unload them.
As much fun as the autos are, I'm more into precision. Nothing like a good heavy gun shooting bug hole groups, then working out the drop and lazering in long range targets.
Unfortunately it sounds like the past two winters have almost entirely wiped out our blacktail deer from the islands of PWS, so don't know when I'll be hunting again.

Excuuuuuuuuuuse me!
(14 hour out of state climbing trip)
Yeah, the Bud can is a scavenged target (note can of spray paint, other photos would show target array), but I'm not much of an alchy and actually drink 3.2 beer fairly often.
Couchmaster,
we're waiting to see your groups.

Trandmanclimbs -- RE: shooting an AR as a lefty:
No problem what-so-ever. The brass deflector outside the ejection port kicks the case away from the shooter. You get used to the safety/mag release location. The only difference is setting up the sling -- you need an ambi-sided attachment point at the buttstock and a right-sided attachment point up toward the end of the forerail. Stag Arms make a left handed upper. I have one of the right handed models and it's a very reliable rifle.

The problem w/ soda/beer can targets is that if you hit em clean they don't even wiggle... Got to love the sound of a high velocity round hitting a steel target:)

They react pretty well to slow fat bullets. You ever fill 'em with stuff?
Just got done detailing that silver AMT in the lead sled in the photo. The fun per dollar yield on that piece is off the charts.
Took a $300 heavy barreled Ruger clone, dropped in an aftermarket adjustable trigger group, replaced/upgraded a recoil spring, slapped on a Leupold and voila!
Brushed down the parts with solvent and went to work with the pick (careful around the muzzle crown). Blew 'em clean. Oiled 'em and blew 'em clean again, then wiped down the whole magilla.
I may try it out the feed reliability with the new premium 40gr Federal rounds tonight. Night shooting is a good way to avoid the crowds, but I'm looking for a spotlight with a remote switch I can operate from the bench so I don't have to leave it on.
It could have alternate applications as well.
Anybody seen such a thing?

I just ordered this in the 3X9. I am a club member so it was only $121.00 and I had a $10.00 coupon so that was most of the shipping. I will write a review as soon as i have enough rounds through it to feel comfortable that it will not fall apart like the last POS varriable I tried...

Scopes are a complicated issue.
They can vastly improve accuracy but also add links to a chain that is not only as strong as the weakest but also compounded by reliance on additional technology.
There are scope mounts that permit alternate use of iron sights as well especially useful in blowing drizzle but these in turn sacrifice in terms of parallax.
Bottom line is that if you mount optics they should be up to the weapon's ballistic capability. A good charged barrel activated by a skilled marksman is not much use if misguided by cheap or damaged optics so choosing a scope is no place to compromise AND proper care and maintenance (keep rechecking those mounts, log your shots, and periodically check your zero) are just as important to figure in the equation as mere initial cost.
A scope should not be an add-on afterthought.

Ron. I was able to read some customer reviews on this scope over on Cheaper than dirt.com It seems like it may be a decent setup?? The cheap 4X scope that I have had on my rifle for the last 16 yrs is getting blurry?? It is full of dust so sun flare really affects your picture.. Time for a new scope and I do hope this is not a waste of my time?? I think these are supposed to retail for arround $140-150? so not exactly cheap??

Well, I know that you don't have a great deal invested in the piece, but you get what you pay for.
I have scopes a quarter century old that still are reliable and render a clear image but they weren't cheap back then.
I think that with the cost of ammo skyrocketing shooters will see the wisdom of investing in tools that enhance accuracy. Not just scopes but better firearms, bench vices, spotting equipment, rangefinders, and chronographs, among other stuff.
And with pistol ammo no longer cheap many more besides myself are shifting to the more metered pace of rifle shooting.

Yea, I am thinking that a bore sighter would pay for itself pretty quick these days!!
I really do hope that the NcStar mark lll tacticle scope ends up being the real deal?? heck the scope costs more than I payed for the rifle.
I Shot the hawken this afternoon. 7 shots with a walk down the range after each shot kept me entertained for for a good half hour... about $4.00 worth of powder and lead.. Still ain't cheap but it's a heck of a cheaper than 30min of FNC w/ majick button!!!!

Ron, that 16yr old scope cost me $17.00 in 1992... Not too bad of a bang for the buck but I just stopped trusting it today.. I think it may have been affected by the soaking it took last week??

It's really hard to describe the difference between a cheap scope
and a real quality scope until you look through them side by side.
Just ask anyone who owns a Leupold.
Even the cheap Leupold's are great, but they are $300 and up.
Ron is correct, you do get what you pay for in scopes,
although there are plenty of scopes out there that will get the job done and are cheap.
I hope that turns out to to be a good one.

I've been so impressed with Leupold that have bought five in a row, but I decided to try a Burris 24X zoom on my latest tack driver, a Rem .22-250 stnls bull with a heavy laminated thumbhole bench stock.
I've taken it out a quarter klick with sub MOA groups using light (50gr) loads, but give me a thousand rounds and a few years and my log will tell whether she holds her zero well.
Its like these people that ask me about my FJ; give me some time, ask me about the Ford. lol

Watched Untraceable last night, good film and anything with Diane Lane is worth watching, but in the start of the film she is looking for a psyberthief and in reviewing suspects she sees that one has 3 handguns and 2 assault rifles registered to him so she just calls up the SWAT team and says, "I've got a door for you to kick down."
No further investigation.
No search warrant.
He's got pistols and assault rifles so he must be a criminal.
Never mind that they are REGISTERED, hence a suggestion that the guy does obey the law (even stupid ones).
Fugging Hollywood.
Hey Coz, they may try hard to get it right on some stuff, but why the constant subtext of gun=evil (even though movies with guns are the ones that put "butts in seats")?

So am I the only one here that thinks doubble taps are stupid for many scenarios yet EVERY soft target that I ever engaged in an IPSC match required a doubble tap...
My split time for aimed fire on targets 20m and closer was running .19 to .24 100ths of a second depending on range/ hostages etc. So you have three dirtbags and you doubble tap the first two dirtbags you have given the 3rd dirtbag an extra .40 of a second to engage you. .40 of a second is a boatload of time in a stress shootining event. Why not drill all 3 once and then go back and drill them again as needed??

thats easy nutjob - use a 44 ;-)
so i'm thinking of sinking the tax rebate into a press and some dies, 9mm and 223 for starters...
tell me what's a good and not so good reloading setup, people ?
(this just seems smarter long term then just sinking 600 bucks into ammo - sort of a teach a man to fish kinda thing...)

Hey Tradman, stay away from any of the NcStar scopes!!! They are crap that is made in China. I found out the hard way. On one scope, both of the lens covers broke in cold weather, the glass sucks, and so does the fat reticle. Total junk!!! I also had a 4.5-14x50 (or something like that) NcStar that I picked up from a friend for $100 and had it mounted to my 21” FAL. I wouldn’t GIVE that thing away to any of my friends! Crap! It has been replaced with a Trijicon ACOG TA01B. Now THAT’S some glass! Any of the rest of you have any experience with the ACOGs (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsite)? Got a TA31F on top of my POF. The dual illumination kicks ass! I’ve found that in combination with a front mounted light, a headlamp pointed at the fiber optic on top works great for shooting at night. Just be sure to turn it off if someone is returning fire!

I’ve been very happy with my Leupolds. As Ron said, you get what you pay for.
