Chiloe, I'm sure you're aware of how happy a Beagle is off-leash in the outdoors.

I miss my old pups....

That's no beagle, that's a terribeagle! They're even worse.

We bailed her out of the dog pound thinking that such a small puppy would be happiest
indoors, and indeed she snuggles nicely on the couch. The other side of her personality
turns out to be unexpectedly feral, however. She's got several "projects" these days, deep
in the woods, which appear to be holes she's digging to China. I've tried explaining to her
that in the forest, she's not at the top of the food chain. Like a teenager she doesn't care.

So you're right, she's so full of joy running free that everyone who sees has to smile. We
worry some and hope it works out, but my odd thought is that risks and all I would live for
such free moments too, if I came back as a dog.

That's awesome, Chiloe. Good on ya for rescuing a dog and setting her 'free'.

"...but my odd thought is that risks and all I would live for

Isn't that like the true meaning of love? Understanding the risk of loss, but willing to engage heart (and head), with empathy, so that each life is made a little better? Filled with a little more tail-wagging joy?

I figure that's why pets come to us...to allow our hearts to expand (like the Grinch on the peak when he's holding the sled...his heart just grows and grows and grows).

These photos make me miss my collies sooooooo much...they were the last dogs I had, and losing them to the ex was almost worse than death. Luckily, I get to turn around and look at a couple of Persians lounging here...who promptly put me in my sub-species human place...;-)

First test-photo-flight of what looks like the new gusty-squirrelly-really-high-wind (Joshua Tree) kite in the hills behind my house.

An anthropologist described the Yup'ik view of seals and other animals as nonhuman persons.
I like that perspective.

That's how I feel about most animals, Larry. They may not look like us, or communicate the same...but they love, play, grieve and hurt just like we do.

Only they're more pure about it. They do it all with such innocence and wild abandon.

Cool ariel photo Chaz!

I saw the ones you posted earlier of you pooch...really liked those, too.

Doberman's are trippy dogs....it's mostly our perception of them, but they alwaysa struck me as 'different' than other dogs. Not in a bad way, just different.

They're certainly different.

I have four dogs, but the Doberman is the only one who follows me around all day long, no matter what I'm doing. Velcro-Dog, it's a common trait among Dobermans.

I gotta ask Slevin, how many pounds?
You probably know you not gonna be the first one asking that question :) 170 or so, depending on before or after a meal (as well as before or after a dump)... I weigh 140, so he beats me in wrestling sometimes.
