ok folks, so a lot of us care about this guy...
...so who is sitting with him 24/7...???
(hospitals can generally come up with a comfortable reclining chair once they accept that you are spending the night...and when the team comes in to change dressings etc...then hospital cafeteria food is generally pretty good these days)
i'll head that way if no one else is picking up on his belay rope
(years ago i spent over a week sitting with someone in LA County General ICU)

Tom, I spent a month with Dan in ICU sleeping between two folding chairs and a trashcan in between to hold up my knees. This hospital did not allow more than two hour visits at a time but got a dispensation from a chief dr. friend. Just saying this to let people know hospital policy can be amended.
I sense that those with Scott right now are hesitant to expand on what's up. That's OK But when you folk need help, contact us. We can be vetted by other friends/climbers. I could not have done it without the help of my big extended family.
Oh yeah, and if you spend the night and the xray person comes in, pretend you are asleep and they will cover you with a heavy cape and you won't have to leave the room.
GO Cozzie!!!

Yeah, some of us already know too much about what it takes to keep alive someone in his condition. You need a very strong stomach with lots of tolerance and respect for the attending professionals...
So long as he has a friend staying by his bedside for emotional support, that's the best any of us can do at this point. I just don't want to see him going through this without an understanding friend at his side. He's a strong guy, but everyone has their limits, and it is much easier to maintain strength in the presence of a caring friend who knows who you are other than a collection of broken parts in a hospital bed.
If you can maintain a positive attitude and learn to read the computer displays: heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen level, along with skin color and responsiveness, etc; then you can provide some continuity of understanding about his condition that goes beyond the notes on the computer from one shift to the next and is appreciated by the nurses. The medical professionals are tremendously competent technically, but can't always provide the sort of emotional support and continuity of understanding of a friend who just stays there as the shifts change from one group to another across the days.

Just saw this thread. Sending good vibes to Scott.
By the way I just spent a few days staying with a friend who had a ground fall in Moab and was flown to St Mary's hospital in Grand Junction. The staff were very supportive of me staying in the room and helping out.

my family and extended family, are part of the climber world...
may you get well and thrive, and may this turn from bad to good, and
in ways that you can cherish, later, as to the love of so many being there

Glad to hear that family is by his side. With such a long road ahead, it will take the support of many sustained for quite some time.
Much later, when you are slowly getting back to the world, interpret the stares of family, friends, and strangers as a tribute to your strength and concern for the suffering you are enduring.
In my darkest hours, I found the courage to let people help me. I learned that it was important for other people to have something to give. Please don't hesitate to ask for what you want and need. You have been good to many folks, and they all want to return the favor, just not knowing how.

.. he broke the fall with a one hand and one leg When Bachar's GF posted the gory details of his death, his wrists and ankles were busted, but he only had a slight head wound- like (while falling) he knew he had to protect his brain, and did try to survive.
His efforts were for naught tho since they took him to Mammoth Hospital specializing in ski injuries for rich Los Angelos on their vacations but lacking in real trauma experience of anything else.

Been away all weekend and just heard this horrible news earlier today. Hang in there, Scott. You've always been a good, honest and supportive friend. This makes my injury look like child's play and one thing that had always kept me positive is knowing it could always be worse.
Coz, your still alive and that in itself is amazing. You have a long road ahead of you but your going to be living the dream once again.
Sending you positive vibes and the best healing power one can muster. Stay strong, my friend. Love you, bro!
