Actually I like the Ruskin quote, but Paul Verhoeven puts it even more succinctly when he summarizes his film, Starship Troopers.

"War makes fascists of us all."

Don't confuse me with an advocate of violence. I'm a jew. We tend to end more fights than we start.

Most relevant sentence in Rockjox last reply:
A gun will not help in this kind of Rape, unfortunately.

I'm not sayin' guns never help.

But I am saying they hurt more than they help.

There’s a great example in literature that exemplifies the two-permit holder gunfight scenario. It’s in the “The Magic Mountain” in which a conservative and a liberal decide after years of arguing with one another to fight a duel with pistols. The liberal, in a gracious act of magnanimity, fires his gun into the ground demonstrating his liberal sensitivities and stubborn refusal to act violently against anyone. At this the conservative puts the gun to his own head and blows his own brains out in a demonstration of fearlessness and a stubborn desire to not let his adversary get away with being a liberal. Perhaps this says it all about ideologues.

LEB, this thread is about weapons in national parks, not about the right to own guns.

Geez Rokjox!!!!!!!! I could have been reading a post from me about 4 years ago. Similar situation, same feelings, etc.

Discussed gun control with a marine buddy of mine the other morning. We were both brought up to respect weapons. You know. Given a rifle at an early age with the admonition "you shoot it you eat it". I've also come to learn that there are many types of gun owners out there. A workmate was asking about buying a gun so my marine friend offered to give him a few lessons first. Nothing worse than someone who thinks you should hold a handgun sideways with a crooked elbow and spout threats about popping a cap in someone's arse. I am a gun owner much the same as I am a fighter. I will never been seen with a gun. I will never threaten anyone with a gun. I carry a weapon only for personal protection. That being said I can guarantee you that if you ever see me pointing a weapon at someone you can be sure a bang will shortly follow. During our long discussion about what we learned and the value of proper training we both agreed that it would be great if some type of training were required before you could purchase a weapon. Where I live now you only need to apply for a concealed permit and pass a background check. In my previous state you were required to take a class. It seems that if a legislator was truly concerned with gun "control" they would think of educating instead of looking for more ways to change the constitution.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's aerial killing frenzy has just begun. So far, the slaughter has claimed the lives of at least 19 wolves.

Tell Governor Palin to stop this brutal practice and start protecting Alaska's majestic wolves today.

Governor Sarah Palin proudly champions this deadly wolf killing program as "one of those last-resort things." But Alaska's aerial killing program has claimed the lives of more than 800 wolves. With over 19 wolves killed already, this season could see a record slaughter of hundreds more.

How far will Palin go to kill wolves? Last year, Governor Palin proposed a $150 reward for each left foreleg of wolves killed within designated areas. A state court identified this as a bounty, which is illegal under state law, and halted the program before any bounties were paid.

It's time for Alaska to end aerial killing of wolves once and for all. Take action today, and let Governor Palin know how much you oppose this barbaric practice.
