Sweet. This guy is a putz though...
"Once again, political leaders in the Bush administration have ignored the preferences of the American public by succumbing to political pressure, in this case generated by the National Rifle Association," said Bill Wade, president of the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees.
"This regulation will put visitors, employees and precious resources of the National Park System at risk. We will do everything possible to overturn it and return to a commonsense approach to guns in national parks that has been working for decades," Wade said.

Having worked with LEO's in Yosemite I kinda doubt most of them see this as a good thing. Also: countdown to people shooting bears for tackling their coolers.
P.s.- NJ on describing someone with an view contrary to yours as a putz, Bluering. I guess the reformation of conservatism ended already? Tis a shame.

"Also: countdown to people shooting bears for tackling their coolers"
Do you know what is required of you to have a conceal/carry permit?
Reread the putz's quote too. How many people with C/C permits discharge their weapons in a irresponsible manner? Do you know how many people walk through crowded malls with C/C guns and never use them or brandish them, even when a fight breaks out?
All this says is that if you have a C/C permit you can still lawfully carry in a NP.
Also WTF is a 'precious resource of the NP system'? The guy is obviously a Bush-hating ideologue...plain/simple.
Unloaded guns by everyone were allowed before, now only responsible permitted people can actually carry LOADED guns.

Originally the CFR came out with regs to discourage poaching.
Fair enough.
But it quickly was adopted by fascist inclined rangers as some sort of social "new order" to the point where, when I had a 9mm cased and unloaded with clips in a separate compartment, he insisted on unloading the clips too.
To put it simply; he demanded a tactical advantage over a law abiding citizen.
WTF??!!!
The hypocrisy was underscored when, after an attempted armed robbery below Touchstone (with shots fired!!), a ranger was heard to say that he wished the guy had tried to rob Olevsky.

Another regulation that seems likely to be rescinded soon after January 20th, 2009. I wonder what changes to regulations the lame ducks will try to slip through during the last two weeks of December, through new year's, when they hope no one's looking?

Chris2, I consider myself more of an armchair lateral thinker, ironist.
I don't think I even have a chair with arms, come to think of it.

It must suck to have to carry a gun to feel safe in a National Park.
Carrying a gun in Mexico would make sense, but Yosemite??

If I were a mother taking my 15yo daughter and her friend on a vacation by myself and staying in a motel just outside of the park I would definitley want a 38 snub in my purse.
If I were a Yosemite Naturalist I would DEFINITELY be packing too.
If I were a young woman hiking over blood mountian GA with her dog I think I'd prefer to have a plinker too.
If the law passes it just means I'm legal now. Never killed a bear but I have shot many. With a camera.

Sorry Fet. I like you but I'm with jbar.
Its not the worst of neighborhoods, but not exactly Shangra-la either.
There are still many of the most dangerous wild animals running wild in the parks.
The trouble is they blend into the others that walk upright but are actually harmless.

No can carry a gun in Mexico. You can go through a very detailed process to get hunting guns approved....but just carrying in Mexico...if caught you'll spend time in the worst Hilton you ever dreamed of. Just sayin.....

Tami, just a question from Lynne trying to learn. What would you do with large thug without a pistol? How would you handle it with you and your daughter? I would appreciate all your thoughts as I am now camping with daughter and self and need to figure these things out.
For guns (pistols) you need lessons and I think you can determine whether a person is friend or foe.
My instructor said to aim for the largest part of the body, NEVER take your eyes off the target, and pull the trigger....repeatedly.

Tami one of the rules of the gun is never point a weapon at someone unless you intend to use it. If you can't pull the trigger then you don't need to be carrying a gun. "This scenario, however, is highly unlikely" Exactly why I never wear my seatbelt.
Lynne it's not the size of the weapon thats important it's how you use it. No pun intended. Protecting your family in a situation like the one you mention starts with being in control of your surroundings, being aware.
LEB "He and his girlfriend getting eaten makes absolutely no sense whats so ever." What really makes no sense is that he had a girlfriend!
Also just noticed there seems to be a couple of different issues here. I don't think anyone should take their dog into an enviroment where he/she could be considered a menue item unless they are sure nothing will happen. I don't carry a weapon to shoot animals and I would never shoot a bear unless it actually attacked me or another person. I've never had any bear trouble. I carry a weapon for the deranged animals out there that society refuses to put down.

Good name for a dog LEB! I've done my fair share of trompin around in the everglades. You always hear the same old story about the hunter following his dog's locator and it leads him right to a gator. I had a small pond in my back yard when I lived in Tampa. The neighbors loved the local gator. He always layed up against their fence. Occasionally they would throw him leftovers. They thought he hung out because he liked them. In reality he was just hoping their little poodle would get out. What a living hell that home must have been for that dog. lol

exceptional Americans love their guns. They want to shoot them everywhere. At home, in the woods, on the freeway, from the clocktower..
