hey there say, john long...

thank you for the update... as to this:

Perhaps a miracle, seeming that paramedics were so concerned by the severity of his injuries they figured they were transporting a dead man to the hospital.

oh my, YES, a miracle...

being alive to have the chance to still be with loved ones...

FOR SCOTT:
as to the face, i remember reading about actor eric flemming and how his face was shattered from an accident, and rebuilt (and this was more than 50 years ago! experimental, at that)... and thus: was still a fine functioning face, he had done for him, and one that could smile back to his friends, and laugh, and get to be himself again...

yes, he had mentioned how he was at first unsure of himself, as this was an uncommon thing to do so long ago, but for those that have seen
him in old rawhide shows, --the rebuilds can be very well done...
how much more so, in this day-and-age...

may all the hard trail that you have to climb and fight through, scott,
be full of grace and love from all those many MANY folks in your corner...
prayers and cheering you onward...

I'm so glad to hear the that there is no major organ or spinal damage.

That is a sigh of relief.

No doubt it's this rote is going to be long and tough, but if anyone is strong enough to send it, it's coz.

Pull hard brother.

Largo,

Thanks for the update, it's great news.

I've no doubt that Coz's constitution and instinct have helped him survive the accident.

While I only know him from posting on here, and his established, considerable reputation, it's clear that he has a load of good friends rooting for him.

Add me to the Taco posse sending him healing vibes.

Regards,

Steve

A horrible accident. Being fit and in good shape before the accident will be of great help during the recovery. My best wishes...

It hurts to be heading north right now. If i had met Coz before i would be headed south, bur i think it's best that he rest right now anyways. I know my early days were simply a blur, and as much as i appreciated seeing friends, it was an effort just to do so.

Heal up Scott, you got this. Sending good vibes bro!

"All f&@ked up but he will live" is great news, as f&@ked up as it sounds. Thanks for the update, John.
I know Scott only as a poster on here but he will be in my thoughts with my running group - we run mindfully and dedicate our runs to those who are suffering in any way. More pragmatically, I will be glad to help if fundraising or donations are needed down the line.

clearly the medical professionals are doing an incredible job

and i hope they have been told something about what an amazing person is in their care

it has long been my opinion that someone in intensive care should have a friend or family member at their bedside 24/7; and this is usually well appreciated by nursing staff so long as you fit in with their professional duties

surely Scott has enough friends nearby to make this happen, but being retired i'm available if anyone thinks that's helpful

(official visiting rules are usually accommodating for such cases and i recently spent several days in Oakland at the intensive care bedside of another old friend recovering from a near deadly assault)

Just got home and read J.L.'s post. Stunned......... called one of Coz's climbing friends. He is beyond stunned. Agree, the focus should not be on how it happened, but on Coz and his healing both physically and mentally. Praying for yo Bro, big time.

The only thing that gave me the willies more than one of those lifts at full extension was working off of a 30'+ extension ladder. Doesn't take much to get either one bucking like a bronco.

Heal up Coz!

Agree with Cochrane. Someone should be with him 24/7. Dan was the director of a hospital pharmacy. He said if either of us ended up in the hospital it was essential someone be there at all times for a number of important reasons.

Perhaps a small team of family and friends can be created to be with Scott and become familiar with his meds and the various machines he is on. Talking to him can help keep him connected to this world and lets Scott know he is not alone in this.

Since nothing else has been set up yet, feel free to send me cards for Scott. Best to do it now. Big Mike is correct, as time passes sometimes so does the immediacy of the moment. I am in San Diego not far from LA and have the time to deliver them or if preferred by Scott and company I can mail them to him.

Just put Scott Cosgrove on the envelope somewhere. Opening them will kill some long hours ahead of him.

Peace and Healing for our friend, lynne

My son dove head first ("air balled") about 15 feet onto pavement. He tried to catch his fall with both arms, which he fractured in multiple places in the fall. He then fractured his skull on both occipital lobes. What followed was an incredibly scary 72 hours of observation followed up by more scary days following into weeks of therapy and observation. In the end, he wound up okay but having a dr come into the ICU every 4 hours to look for brain fluid leaking out your sons nose is a bit rough.

A man who worked for me fractured his skull badly on lava falling off the back of a 4 wheeler in Hawaii. He was in a full (non induced) coma for 3-4 days. His recovery took nearly a year and during that time he came back to work then had to leave again because he was still suffering from TBI, manifested by extreme mood swings and fatigue.

My nephew just had a full-speed head-to-head collision playing Ultimate. He was knocked out. He's 9+ months into his recovery and still can't stare at a screen without an instant migraine.

Based on these experiences I'd say that it's very hard to tell what's going to be true in a week based on what's true right now. Keep your fingers and toes crossed, keep up the encouragement, and be ready for what appear to be setbacks but that may turn out to be speed bumps in the path to recovery.

hey there say, PeterNBiddle...

say, good to see a small 'trail-marker' as to the cautions of the future,
that way, as someone gets well, the family/friends, can keep tabs and look out for stuff that is many times never-much taught (for folks to be aware of)...

(i share here, many times about head injury and the after-years effects,
so i do understand what you are saying)...

one step at a time... getting well,of course, first...

but YES, these sign-post are needed, as well... part of an anchor, to understanding what the general public
does not know... AND part of having folks 'be ready' to be there, and
plan ahead so no one goes through those hard battles, alone...
(which sadly, to often happens, in the world)...

edit: this way folks will not get tempted to be disappointed,
which can lead to dejection, and then depression...
as you said--due to the bumps along the way, (i like the speed bump
part you shared)...

:)
thanks for sharing... say, i hope your son and nephew are doing
better/well through the years, as best they can...

Scott,

My sympathies go out to you. I took a 25' grounder out of a tree in 1991 with the top of the tree landing on top of me and couldn't get up or walk away. Broken collar bone and compression fracture of two vertebrae, along with torn abdominal muscles and some permanent paralysis at my left hip. Was two inches shorter after that but was still able to climb decent for several more years before other injuries put me off. Chronic lower back pain still a problem but sure beats the alternative.

Get to see my two oldest grand kids make it to college and retirement looms. I remember being on Higher Cathedral Northeast Buttress around the late eighties or early nineties and seeing you and your partner Middendorf gracefully sailing up Mary's Tears on past us to our left. I'm thinking good thoughts about you now as are all of us here. Get well soon.

Lynnie, thank you for an address to send cards. This is a super place for a support team, and this is a good going already for Coz. Neebs, thank you for your comments.

Coz, we all expect the miraculous healings to continue. Yes, actually, we do. And we are praying for them as well.
