FaceLift is one great exploration while doing something nice. I've walked into more interesting areas while picking up trash. As for those that don't get it... Well, they are who they are and it's not Ken's or anyone else's problem, they cheat themselves.

I will suggest you feel this way because you are disposed to feel this way.
Read the newspapers about the economic disasters pressing in on us all, including upon the NPS, and just ponder what forces may be at work. I am not going to speculate on a public forum. Talk a bit with Ken. Get some facts.
You will find out what is really going on.
Dirtbags don't even register on the NPS radar screen.

Pseudo politics aside... the 2011 Facelift t-shirts are at the printers and should be available soon for those who can not make it to the wonderful event but still want to support Ken's efforts while wearing a cool collector's item.

Here's to my third Facelift!
Highlights of the first two: Sushifest, Apron trash pick-up, climbing Bishop's Terrace and some of CS Concerto/Fecophilia with bluering and buddy, dismantling a weather station on what's left of the old Wawona Road, climbing base routes at El Cap with crimpergirl while (pre-BrassNuts) racking my brain for someone to set her up with, dewaterbottling SFHD, Tacofest, failing miserably on Sherrie's Crack with good company, and both years enjoying chat and music (memorably Timidtoprope's guitar) around the campfire. Met dozens of great people, including RANGERS and TOOLS who somehow seemed non-evil, climbing legends and role-models, and others like me in the climbing peanut gallery.
The ratio of work to climbing was higher the second year, and it's the time I will remember even more fondly.
This time I am volunteering (and maybe climbing?) with my 17yo son, who, while he's never been to a Yosemite Facelift, a few years ago organized his own simultaneous Facelift of Glen Park Canyon in SF. He roped his buddies into picking up trash, including all the crap that gets dumped off O'Shaughnessy into the glen. I was proud of the lads, even or maybe especially for their regrettable decision to haul all the heavy stuff (like 1950s wheels/tires) up hundreds of vertical feet to our house instead of leaving it down in the park where the City would pick it up.
I look forward to the work, to the climbing, to the location, to being a part of a good thing, to celebrating nuptials of people I admire, to reconnecting and newly connecting with awesome people.
If anyone is on the fence, give it a shot. It's a good time.

Seems like acorns really do fall close to the tree. Convince your son not to just pick up trash. He's young. Mix it up a little. His project in Glen Park Canyon sounds like a huge success. Great work!

Bump. Barely a month to go - how exciting!
Hopefully we'll hear soon regarding camping. For those who've just shown up, or haven't been paying attention, if you want to camp in connection with the FaceLift, you must complete and send in the form on the Yosemite Climbing Association website, as soon as possible. See http://www.yosemiteclimbing.org/, and be complete and exact.
Managing the camping is a huge effort, and the easier you can make it for the YCA, the better. Don't request camping if you aren't committed, don't show up without having made arrangements and hope it'll magically work out (it won't), don't be a no show, and don't make last minute requests or changes.
(Given that we're travelling to Yosemite mainly to pick up other peoples' garbage, maybe we should all be committed...)
I surmise that we haven't heard about camping so far because a) Ken is busy, b) Ken's helper(s) is busy, c) the NPS hasn't committed with regard to some camping, or (most probable) d) the YCA wanted to wait until most forms were in, to take care of all camping at once.

Wawona is a 30 to 45 minute drive. Depending on what kind of drivers you get behind. Housekeeping camp is tents and is in the valley. Curry village is also in the valley and has some cabins, some tents, and some motel like rooms. Not sure what is available as I don't know your dates.
You can also search for lodging in Yosemite West, which is about 15 minutes from the valley. There are condos, and houses there. Plus you can search for housing in Foresta, which is also about 15 minutes to the valley floor. These options are not part of DNC, which is the park concessionaire, so you need to google them.
Are you bringing any camping gear? Like sleeping bags and such. Maybe someone could loan you a tent. Though It is likely that by this time the free camping in the valley for the facelift is full. Just guessing here, but it seems likely.

Yellowpines is a volunteer's ground. Its not reserved by DNC. Camp 4 is walking distance to curry, but most parties are at yellowpines. You have to reserve a campsite through the facelift if you want in yellowpines.

You don't have to walk anywhere in the Valley. Shuttle buses every 15 minutes in general.

I think the Valley is the perfect place to walk...everywhere.
If I'm late or lazy I'll ride the bus, but I'm more into self locomoted adventure. I must get myself there, if you will.

Lolli, glad you're coming!
It's a long walk from Curry to Camp 4 but there are shuttle buses door to door. Housekeeping is much closer and also has shuttle buses.
OH, I see now you'll be trying Yellow Pines, good idea since it's the absolute best camping place in The Valley even without SuperTopo retards.
Sept weather will likely be EXCELLENT. Bring shorts, T shirts, tank tops, etc. Sun protection! But also bring long trousers, a sweater and an anorak in case there's a cold or wet spell. Temp less than 5C is very unlikely. If you get cold, I'm sure Mighty Hiker (Anders) can make room. ;-)
You can do all the "regular" trails in sneakers but will want good fell shoes/boots for the more interesting hikes. You can buy anything you really need in the Valley and the prices aren't too outrageous.
You can also rent a bike for quick getting around. Although getting back to Yellowpines after the big parties on a bike might be wobbly. ;-)
You can also get a bus from The Valley to Tuolumne Meadows which is NOT to be missed! Plan on at least one full day up there.

I got my confirmation. Seems pretty clear this is well under control. I can imagine there are a huge number of reservations plus probably many requests for information.
We are on our way for 2011.

Lolli, Yellow Pines group camping is only for volunteers and educational programs, and so not clearly marked on maps. It would just mislead tourists into thinking they might get camping there. Find Sentinel Beach on a map of Yosemite, at http://www.nps.gov/pwr/customcf/apps/maps/showmap.cfm?alphacode=yose&parkname=Yosemite%20National%20Park
Yellow Pines is about 1/2 km west, part way to Cathedral Beach. It isn't open to individual camping - groups only, pre-arranged.
A recent message from the YCA person helping with the camping: Thanks for your patience with camping. It's been a mess... SO many emails and requests and so much to pull together and I'm the only one doing it. Yikes!
Should be self-explanatory. Patience seems the watchword - if needed, perhaps yogi can offer hints as to its practice.

Do we have a venue for the axe-throwing contest yet? I was kinda hoping
for the front yard of the Chief Ranger's pad.
We could spice it up by pitting Socialists vs Repuglicants.
