Re: the Buttermilk road.
The road is in bad shape because too many people drive too damn fast on it!
If your raising dust, your going too fast, even if that means going 5 mph.
If your going over 25, your speeding, knock it off!
Leave it alone and it will(unfortunately probably NOT) slow everyone down and reduce the dust that damages road side plants.

Spoke with a visitor today out in the b-milk. Funny he actually asked me why the road was in so bad of shape. He said that it was his first time out there and that he was working park time for the USFS in Northern Cali and had expected the road to be in better shape.
How are washboards actually made? I know it does not help that people head out there right after a snow fall and rutt the place up either. BUT IF i had just drove 20hrs to climb at the buttermilk, I may rutt the place too, to try to climb out there.

I was just out there and I thought the road was great. If you cruise at 35 or faster you glide right over the washboards, that's the secret.

Nahhhh.
How are you John? I haven't heard of you in ages. Still in Oklahoma doing the oil business gig. I will be steering a horizontal well starting in a couple of weeks or so. Those take a lot of time.
I have spent enough time around Doug for some of his gentle vibes to infect me. The gestation period was about twenty years, but I try to roll with it. Better for knowing him. I remember his 40th birthday party. Lots of people show up for those. I think I puked red wine on some lady's dress, but I can't be sure. That dude has a LOT of friends. I just have a beer on my birthday and carve another notch in a tree.
I would like to see him up in front of an audience. And I wish that he would write more. I am wagering that he has about 200 pounds of notebooks full of great stuff.
If I get rich, I will hire him some assistant to organize things. Then we would get more of the groovy stuff. It will have to be a MALE assistant.

hey, that's a lie, we've got a sushi restaurant now. Freshest sushi on earth, they take trout right out of the Bishop canal and dump them on your table alive. The cow dung in the water gives it a certain joo no say quah.
Keeping building momentum, people....we need to get that trail network finished, drink all the beer the AAC can afford, and then struggle up to the Buttermilk at 10am on Sunday morning to show the Forest Service and the BLM that climbers can be thoughtful and respectful, even when hungover.
I'm back in VT right now, hike up Mt Abraham today. Damn, this is a beatiful state....and they produce a whole lot of great food around here.
Speaking of which, just about time to tuck into a dinner made by Sarah's mother and grandmother. Homecooked x2. Keep it real out there - Darren

Sure wish I could be there for Doug's talk. Maybe he'll come to Vancouver some time.
Dirt/gravel roads can't help having ruts, potholes, and washboard - it's in their nature. Even very slow driving only helps a bit - something about simple harmonic motion, heavy objects, springs etc. (Probably the NTSA has a bunch of information about this somewhere.) Although fast driving does tend to damage them more quickly. You'd have to grade them every week to keep them fairly smooth.
It was nice that the NPS put a bunch of gravel in the Camp 4 parking lot this year - it's kept it smoother, plus kept down the dust.
