Good to hear.
We don't get service up here for the iphone yet, but I love most tech devices, so it's interesting to hear about this stuff. Fun stuff for sure.
Just as long as it does what you want, that's the key...

I'm finally breaking down and getting one of these. My ipod ius about dead and my Palm is obsolete for medical applications and my Blackberry (which is really great) is dying as well. How are people finding the AT&T service especially in rural areas?

I'll be curious to hear the comparison between the blackberry and the iPhone. Most of what I heard is the Blackberry sucks in comparison. Of course when it comes to a UI Apple is second to none and by a large margin.

The best apps require you to jailbreak and install Cydia.
PDANet, for instance... It is pretty freakin' sweet, being able to work on the laptop and upload changes made to a client's website, in the middle of the desert.
"I'll be curious to hear the comparison between the blackberry and the iPhone."
Pretty much anyone I know that has a Storm hates it. None of the so-called iPhone killers has even come close yet. They simply have no competition at the moment, and none on the horizon.

this sucks, that sucks....dude, it's a phone...
Like I said above, as long as your device is doing what you want it to do...seems most of the programs listed above are available in blackberry form.(except google earth, but google maps works pretty well for what I need)
I've read it's easier to harvest data from a iphone (emails, passwords, financial stuff) over a blackberry, something about the level of encryption...though I don't have the link off hand.
I like my BB storm, because the bossman pays for it, and it does everything I want it to(and more)
Cheers
edit: The iPhone was outsold by the BB Curve last quarter....though I think the 'buy one get one free' deal had alot to do with it....

TKingsbury, I did a road trip last summer and iPhone coverage most of the way. Boulder> Sheridan> Powell> Billings> Bozeman> Butte> Missoula> Moscow> McCall> Boise> City of Rocks> Logan> SLC> Evanston> Rawlins> Laramie> Ft. Collins> Boulder.
Lost cell over the Big Horns, in Lochsa Canyon, City of Rocks (Alma worked!). Clear as a bell elsewhere.
Funny thing is, if you provide Apple with an address in an area which doesn't have native AT&T coverage, they won't sell you a phone. I guess they pay a hefty fee to whoever owns the towers/license and don't want people who are in that area all the time to be using thier phone. My friends in Ouray are constantly told that the iPhone doesn't work there. Not so. It's clear as a bell for me. I heard the same story in Bozeman last year.

It'll technically work Mal, but I don't want to lie about my address to get a plan, or crack the phone and use a different carrier(like my boss did for awhile)
Word has it that carriers will be available in our area soon though...

UI is everything. If you don't think so then I have a couple HP-UX computers you can have to do all your work on (Werner?).
I'm not here to pick a fight with the dark side. Those that have iPhones all rave about them and love them. I've only had this for a few weeks and wonder how I lived without it (obviously i did). I'm big on intuitive UI's. I just laugh with the people that celebrate their new BB. Good luck with it. The thing is... how can you know if it does what you want if you've never had an iPhone.
Maybe the tell-tale sign was when i went to cancel verizon and they asked why. I said I want an iPhone. They asked if I new about the BB. I said yes and I want an iPhone. They didn't even try to sell me (probably because they realize it's pointless).
But again.... if you like:
unix> rm -rf /
thanks for the list, mal and others.

Nature is right. It really does come down to the UI. And hate to say it, but I've used the BB storm, the LG stuff, etc. They *do* suck, and simply don't come close. From there, we can go into how in all benchmark tests, iPhones are the fastest phone on the market. By far the most apps, etc. But, again, really? It comes down to the UI.
That being said, a free phone, that a boss pays for, is always a cool deal! Unless, of course, they start taxing you (feds) on any personal use time on that phone (which they are trying to do for employer owned/paid for cells)...

Not here to argue, I'd probably have one if there were carriers up here...I was just wondering about about some of the newer features...I'm glad y'all like your phones, and that you can cut & paste now etc...seemed like some strange drawbacks is all.
I was just making a point...I just think fanboying about anything is kinda silly, why even spend the energy on saying your is better, and something else sucks? Just use the product...IMO your productivity is what should matter...It shouldn't matter what device I used to send my email, as long I the email gets sent etc...
A wise man once said, it's not the shoes
and the free phone thing is sweet, no problems with usage etc, I must say I have a pretty sweet gig...
this post was sent from a Commodore 64 ;)

Commodore 64's rock, dude!
I agree about productivity. I guess that's why I like my iPhone so much. It's been by far the most useful phone I've ever had. It's actually a valuable part of my business now. It's funny... When I park my car somewhere shady, or long term, I've noticed I now grab the laptop and iPhone. Camera gear can stay. The iPhone and laptop *are* my business, the $12k photo bag is insured and replaceable. hahaha
So, yeah, I agree! I'm a productivity fanboy and people should use whatever works for them!

Here's a cool trick for google maps that you might not be aware of:
You can view .kml and .kmz (polygons, points, GIS data) on the mobile if it's hosted somewhere on the web. Go to the search, and paste in the address of the hosted data. It should pop right up...
When I have to go out and do field work, it's nice to be able to throw in property boundaries etc...I still like the trimble with arcpad, but it impresses clients to have their ranch on your phone...and pretty sleek too
I have also been mapping boulder problems, so it's fun to throw the point overlay onto google maps and have a make shift virtual guide...
edit: well said Nef! productivity fanboy...LOL

Good topic.
Mapmyride. Let's you record your rides and download them, giving you distance, elevation, gradients of different climbs. Pretty cool.
KCRW Radio. If you live in LA, lets you hear some programs live or have instant access to archived ones.
Stanza. Let's you download and read (for free) classic books.
NY Times. Let's you update the paper to read later.
iPity. All the classic quotes from Mr. T. Nothing better than being able to silence someone by having Mr. T. say "Shut up fool!"
