I tried a hotter ascent once. "Tried" being the key word, and we bailed from the 3rd pitch.

Second week in September, '79 Pat Miller and I did Dream Of Dead Horses which doesn't go into the shade till around 5:00.

Record heat in Moab (probably still on the books) 122 degrees on the ledge 2/3 up.

End of the day skin peeled off our red sides, burned from the hot racks through our t-shirts.

I have no idea why I wanted to do a south facing route then. Crazy. But once we rapped to the start we were committed.
I learned my lesson.

well done! made me sweat (and thirsty) just looking at the pics.

...and thought I recognized Little Chiloe ...but he looks taller than papa, so not sure the "little" fits.

thanks for sharing the adventure!

Was just outside of Moab this past week... Climbed a bit on Wall Street, thought I'd head down to check out the other areas. Went down to check out the Tombstones, Space Tower, and the Ice Cream Parlor...

While sitting in the parking area below Space Tower, looking up at the cliffs, trying to figure out where stuff was, I kept feeling this heat coming off of the window. The window on the *shady* side of the car. I suddenly felt this tremendous heat, like I'd never really felt while sitting in a car, and finally looked up at the outside temp gauge. Funny you mention 122 degrees, Ron, because that's *exactly* what the outside temp gauge was being reported as. Touching the window was close to painful. Felt like it'd been in a hot oven for a while. Got the f*#k out of there. Was 98 degrees up at Wall Street...

Hah, not hardly.

Heard through the grapevine he's been crash-testing a bunch of different belay devices lately,
and will have some interesting results to report.
