Thought about "Riders on the Storm" for this new route...
figured it was played out.

Settled on "Debra" instead.

"That is pretty creative. Especially when they shave little designs"

Spoken with such authority on the matter. :)

Kris,
Is it true Laeger started the "Welcome to..." Tradition?

I like the additional "Now Go Home!" names.

A little quick research finds that "Welcome to the Gunks" is probably the first, done by Jim Kolocotronis and Andy Cairns in '73. Herb, Dave Houser and Jan McCollum apperently did Welcome to Josh in about '77. Laeger did Welcome to Dome and ...to Courtright in '83 and '84.

Inamed a route on Pulpit Rock, "You Will Burn in Hell For Your Sins". Do you think there's another one somewhere?

Gib Lewis, Jim Wilson and I did a route at Suicide Rock in 1976, which we called, “Quiet Desperation.” It had delicate footwork, a puzzling sequence, and hard crimping. The difficulties seemed more cerebral than physical, and so we thought the name described the experience of the climb pretty well. The name is, of course, a reference to Thoreau’s, “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”

Since then I have noted climbs with the same name in Wisconsin, Colorado, and the UK. Must be a good name, given its popularity.

Quiet Desperation 5.9 - Stately Pleasure Dome, Tuolumne - Jim Pettigrew, Dave Bircheff, August 1972.

Backed off it once, since it was way worse for the follower and I was told in no uncertain terms to reverse the 5.9 downclimb and get back to the belay (easy to bail up to S crack). Not much pro under that big arch...and even if there had been, you really want to lead not follow. Good thing too, since later on we discovered that the bolted belay at the end of the pitch had one completely sheared off bolt and one halfway-out 1/4" bolt.

You forgot 'Welcome to Lost Eagle' (5.10a/b X).

Here's a truly "abused" root name.......'Beat Your Step Child Lately?" (5.11a, somewhere outside of Shaver Lake ;)

We put up a junky little route at mission gorge ca. '79 or so
and named it "sloppy seconds" pretty lame I know.
We originally named it "Boner's Knot"
Should of kept it!

Surely the most common route and boulder problem name is "Unnamed." I wish guidebook and website authors would just coin a name for all of them--which would make it easier to keep track of climbs for those of us who keep a climbing journal.
