I'd do a wall with a fag, but we'd be in seperate ledges for sure... at least for the first few nights.

It'd have to be when Tom Evens was not at the bridge though.

Well, it may be no coincidence that many big wall teams are pairs (couples), and pairs of males at that. Alpinists, too. And that they have sometimes been known to cuddle if not spoon.

Leaving aside PTPP and his sheep thing, that is.

Funny stuff pedge.

For Fattrad:
You asked for a new Jewish joke? I know you're jewish and I appreciate people who don't take sh#t too seriously in this life. I think when you've lost the ability to laugh at an offense or yourself, you've already lost it all.

So here you go:
Q: What does a Jewish child molester say to a little boy?

A: "Now son, don't you think that's QUITE enough candy?"

Actually, I think that the STForum can exist without the jocular references to gays that seem to be pervasive. There really is no reason to single out a particular segment of the climbing population based on their sexual identity. There is are equally unnecessary comments regarding women here too.

When one examines the reason why these references seem humorous, the reasons invariably point back to a set of rather ugly stereotypes held up by the notion of an established "correct" societal standard.

This seems to be quite at odds with the belief that climbing is about the realization of individual potential to achieve well outside those very same social norms. One would have concluded that climbers, as a group, would be less apt to cling to those norms and be more accepting of the variance of individuals. This seems to be an overly optimistic stereotype.

Maybe I've read too much, but I've always felt that Socrates had it right: "an unexamined life is not worth living"

Of course it's o.k., Ed.

But telling people what words are unacceptable to use is censorship and even more upsetting to me that the silly word.

People should lighten up regarding this crap. It's all about context and intent anyway, usually these words are used in humorous, joking terms.

And yeah, OP actually comes off more hateful than those he accuses.

Ed expresses it more eloquently than I could.

Also, law of averages being what it is, it's a pretty sure bet that some of the posters who make some real contributions to ST are gay or bi. Sure, they could vote with their feet if they find some of the content here offensive or hurtful, but I think that'd be to our collective detriment.

Hey Ed and Redwrick,

I may just be oblivious to it, but where are the offensive posts? I honsetly can not think of any.

I agree with Bluering in that most of the jocularity here is meant as a joke. I do not find joking about societial norms offensive, I actually find it necessary.

So, if you were climbing a wall and woke up one morning to find a used condom hanging out your butt, would you tell anyone?

Next time I do I wall I will have to leave a condom on Dolt Tower.

What a joke.

I agree with Prod and bluey.

Trash talking is part of anything that involves a group of guys. Period. Not just climbing. If there's real gay bashing, real hateful things being said, sure, it's wrong and out of line. Same is true of things said to/about women. I've always seen the group on ST to be very good about checking people when they get out of line towards any group.

Anything else is really just whining for the sake of whining... Save the drama for your mama.

Thank you Ed, SteveW and Redwreck for your dose of sanity.

I too have never really figured out how climbers, who have always kinds of been on the outskirts of society, don't have a more relaxed attitudes towards others pushed to the outskirts.

And BTW, please don't insult my intelligence by arguing that I'm curtailing an important constitutional right when pointing out that someone is being inappropriate. The words you use have consequences. If a person doesn't want to be branded as a bigot, they shouldn't speak like one.

In general I've found climbers to be about the most tollerant and easy going group of people. If you were a real climber, i.e. climb outdoors on rocks and spend time with other climbers you would know this.

But like any other group, climbers joke and rib eachother.

And if one doesn't want to perpetuate stereotypes, don't act like an effeminate crybaby.
