QP, that's why I bumped this thread. For roughly the past 18 days the Pakis have started dealing with a long ignored problem. See here...

In the past week there have been several suicide bombings killing innocent people. Lots of people. The Pak army finally opened up the can of whoop-ass.
I just hope we're prepared to deal with all the Talibunnies that are going to be running across the border into Afghanistan.

Now I don't know squat about Pakistan's geography, and I am too lazy to get up and look at a map, but how is this going to affect climbers visiting Pakistan to climb? Has it already? Are people delaying/canceling expeditions or are the heavily trafficked destinations out of harms way?

I think they are relatively safe. A buddy of mine's mother operates a guide service in Pakistan. I brought up the question and he shrugged it off as no problem.

Just fly to Islamabad and transfer to a flight to Gilgit or Skardu. What could go wrong? That said, traveling there can be a major PITA regardless of turmoil. Also, we had major problems resulting from an uprising, and found ourselves in a couple sketch situations. Not threatened with beheading or anything like that, but wrong place wrong time kind of stuff. I'd probably give the Hindu Kush a miss.

I sent this article to a Pakistani friend.
Obviously written from an Indian point of view, but it has a ring to it.

What do you think?
(Link isn't working, I'll see if I can find the article and post it)

Here was his reply.
I could'nt agree more with this guy's analysis. This is exactly what Pakistan's leadership is
whether it be the civil government or the military they have been playing this madman
card throughout the history and have been ripping off the world of their aid and charity.
These few elites have got it down to a science and perfected it and the general public
suffers.
I tell you if Pakistan wants to take care of these Talibans or Terrorists they can wipe them
out right now within few months but then they won't because then how will they get the
aid and fill up their greedy bellies. All these leaders and generals are nothing but greedy
bastards. They don't care for people.
And the last conclusion that some times the only option is to use strength is absolutely
valid for such #$%$%&&*_up leaders. Obama should stand by his word that he promoted
during his campagne and that is to take over Afganistan and Pakistan with the help of India
and root out Osama and take care of these bastard leaders and terrorists.
There is a lot to say and we will get together soon.

DU, I doubt it very much. Iran is much more likely. Iran's influence into conflicts in Iraq, Yemen, Somalia/Sudan, Israel, and Afghanistan is much more likely to cause potential problems.
