Quirky and small-time but a sentimental favorite.

Mountain Climbing in Maine offers very little in the way of attribution. All I can find is:

Published by
Department of Economic Development
Room 211 M
State House
Augusta, Maine
Published under appropriation No. 3920

Tumbledown Mountain is in the guide

The Needles Guide is from 1971 by Bob Kamps, "based on an earlier mimeographed guide" by Herb Cohn. In the preface it also says that Kay Arnott and Richard Goldstone did the finish work on the author's sketches of the Ten Pins.

In the spirit of Greg's post ... here's another one a few of you might recall.
Like Ament's blue book, Roper's red book fueled a lot of dreams.
Am I the only one who wrote notes in his classic guidebooks?

Do any of you collectors have the Jim Halfpenny guide to Vedauwoo, circa 1970?

Hey - these are great! Would any of you be interested in sending me the images so I can make a Guidebooks set in the AAC Library Flickr page? The library would be glad to make a central place for all your collections - we can't scan everything, but if you guys do the scanning, we can do the archiving and make it all accessible. And the best thing about flickr is if you join Flickr too, you can comment and link on all the photos to keep the conversations going, without having to constantly find and bump the thread.

Our flickr page is here:

or email me at bheller AT americanalpineclub DOT org if you want to talk about it!

Although many of the images are of spines, and Greg took down or moved his extensive images.

Greg, there's probably a 12-step program for people with your addiction. I think you should seek it out while there's still time.

I hear ya... I've slowed way down the last few years. Had a relapse the weekend of the Kor show, but Neptunes is right there, so you can't hardly blame a guy.

There's one guide in there that nobody but me has... see if you can spot it. Hint... Arizona.

Greg, I'm not sure which AZ guide it is, but there are many great ones pictured -- The Granite Dells guide is particularly neat. Thanks for reposting all those.

I have that Granite Dells guide, too. Steel, I think you showed me parts of at least one guide that no one has but you.

Keep an eye open for that 1/2¢ guide. It might have the first use of the Word 'Offwidth' in it. I have a xerox copy of it back at the Ranch, but I'm not going to be able to get there for a bit.

I will see if I can get a picture of one of my (and one of my good friend's) favorite guides; Desperate Grace by Rex Green. It is an old Wasatch Guide full of little quips like the discussion on pitons where the author states "The rock, like a good woman, can only take the occasional pounding." OUCH!!

Greg, I'm not one to niggle about straying from a subject heading, just curious: I count around 500 titles, so if that's your idea of "a few", how many guides do you REALLY have?

Alright, I'll be the one to ask: Got any higher res scans of those books/collages? I'd love to get a better look at them

MH2 - I realize I may have overtaken your thread. Let me know and I can remove my humongous post. No worries.

Oh... a few... 650 or thereabouts...
