Personally I look forward to:
The lack of torture.
The lack of illegal wiretapping.
The increased executive transparency.
The influx of young, smart new minds who will once again fill our gov't with the kinds of personnel that made our gov't effective and competent in the past.
That seems like a damn good start to me.

Justices John Paul Stevens (88) and Ruth Ginsburg (75) are probably breathing a big sigh of relief right now.

Warbler, as long as they're not new taxes I agree. The oil binge has gone on too long. Why support people supplying you oil that have nada but the worst in mind for you....
Thinking that if we have problems with terrorists that are funded by oil profits from their countries and exclusive families, if we didn't use oil products ???? Some of our problems would cease?

Plus, Kevin, it would require that the US invest in education. One of the few investments that pays off for almost everyone and every country - way better than term deposits, bonds, or stocks.

I'm with you on these High. I think the open condoning of torture will stop, but I doubt some of the things the CIA does will end. Too many people still support torture.

It would be interesting to see a new approach regarding Cuba. Apart from relaxing the generally absurd policies (travel, trade, etc) that have ossified US actions, that is.
For example, state publicly that US assistance will be provided to help Cuba restructure and rebuild - on condition that Cuba holds free elections, with appropriate international support and supervision, and adopts a democratic constitution, with reasonable protection for human rights. Reach some reasonable compromise regarding buying off those companies that lost out in 1959/60 - not that all of them had clean records in terms of what they did in Cuba. Administer some tough love to the emigre community, some of whose intransigence is mind-boggling.
Then use it as an example for other Latin-American countries, who are tired of nearly two centuries of US bullying and clumsiness.

The world looks with hope for change in America. Electing Obama gives the world hope once again.

"n concert halls and ballrooms, in plazas and at beach parties, people across the globe hailed Barack Obama's election as a stroke for racial equality and voiced hopes his presidency would herald a balanced, less confrontational America.'
Less confrontational... Amen

Lois, you are incorrigible. I don't see anyone here acting like Obama is some kind of Guru, but you are welcome to your opinion.

Personally, I feel like we've been held hostage for 8 years by a madman holding a gun.
Finally the man put the gun down and in a few months promises to leave the room.
I'm relieved.
What Obama does is going to be heavily dependent on circumstances because he will enter office in a crisis, not business as usual
What I expect though, is a breath of fresh air from policies that don't bugger our civil liberties or offend common decency like the stuff Bush/Cheney pulled. Some folks were getting used to that sh#t but you can bet Biden won't claim the VP isn't part of the executive branch nor Obama won't offer signing statements that claim to be above the law.
Peace

Following on from Karl's comment, in September 2001 the US had the goodwill of almost the whole world. It could have had widespread international support for any reasonable measure to not only respond to the terrorist attacks, but also to address the underlying causes. Bush et al utterly squandered that good will.
Today, the US again has the goodwill of much of the world. It is seen again as a place which, however flawed, offers hope. Let us hope that Obama uses that goodwill wisely.

Lois, show me one person on this thread that think Obama can wave a magic wand. Just one. Certainly there are a lot of foolish people in this world, but show me one person on this thread. What I see, are calm collected people who realize that there are difficult times ahead.
As for what the rest of the world thinks. I have already given a link to one article about it. Plus I have gotten 2 emails from friends overseas who are happy about the end of the Bush era and say many folks are breathing a sigh of relief. The world sees Bush as a Bully and a fool. Perhaps one day you will open your eyes to this. I know that you have said it doesn't matter what the rest of the world thinks, but I can tell you that I seriously disagree with you. If we are to root out terrorist, then we need the help of the rest of the world.
Edit:
Just read your comment about Karl thinking of Obama as a guru. That is the funniest thing you have written in awhile because it is so incredibly off the mark. Oh well. Good luck Lois.

Lois, you seem to have no idea how many people around the world feared what Bush would do. None of what I have said has anything to do with taking our eyes off the snakes. If anything, Bush destroyed much of the goodwill that was helping us control the snakes as though brute force could ever wipe out terrorism.
Lest you forget.
Jesus taught, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. So even he understood snakes.

Lois, the statement about serpents is meant to convey the notion that one should be wise to the ways of serpents. It is about serpentine logic, not actual snakes. Easterners use a lot of symbolism. They are not literal folks. You have to know what a snake symbolizes to understand that.
