Chiloe,

I've always appreciated your data and resources on this issue. My question assumes human activity is causing global warming. My question is really one of what we do about it. Should we all drink the Jonestown Cool-Aid? Should we immediately ban all cumbustion? Those seem silly, but how do we differentiate silly solutions from useful ones without comparing marginal costs and benfits?

I love how the Chicken Little crowd always says, "That's a fact!" without presenting any facts. They then call you a moron if you don't agree with them.

John, "drink the Jonestown Cool-Aid"?
Jody, "the Chicken Little crowd"?

You guys seem to believe that the thousands of scientists who believe differently than you do, are cartoons.

Those "thousands of scientists" believe differently, but cannot PROVE their caes. They ASSume that humans are contributing to the warming.

There are also thousands of scientists who agree with me.

Jody, your beliefs don't come from science, and no scientist anywhere could change them. You know that, why pretend otherwise?

Prove your case.

My beliefs on warming are from science.

Also, that is a weak way to prove your case...by saying I can't prove mine.

Always thought it would be cool for one day for all us people that really own the U.S. to collectively agree on ONE THING and do it ! We could you know, kind of like the Boston Tea Party. Just Do It !

So we ALL don't use our cars for one day or do something to fight against the Huge Burden of Taxation. Would it kill us? Nah!
Would it make a statement...HUGE. One Day would make a difference, send a message. We could do it.

(Course not referring to emergency services etc.)

The question was whether HUMANS are causing global warming. I didn't say glaciers weren't receding.

Chiloe,

Did you read my post? I am not questioning anthropogenic global warming. I'm trying to measure its costs and the the cost of ameliorating it. You're evading my question.

East side, when did those glaciers start to recede?

Didn't the Ice Age peak about 20,000 years ago? What initiated its retreat then? The Industrial Revolution and burning fossil fuels?

Is it just me ? Maybe I'm tired and not thinking clearly. I am more than willing to be told so. I asked several posts up just why we don't DO something. Following posts just argue the point de point. Debating is good but it really Solves few problems. After debate, action seems to be a good course to follow. Action of course that is well thought out by all parties involved. IMHO

Lynne, we shouldn't just DO something if it isn't really going to help. Doing something just to make ourselves feel good isn't a good enough reason.

In a few words Lynn....Money plays a huge role in the political decision making process. The fossil fuel industries are amongst the biggest political donors. They don't do this out of Charity or the public interest. The donate in order to influence public policy so as to maximize profit. They have been quite successful in holding back any real attempt to change the energy status quo in the USA.

A good example of the depth of this influence was the recent refusal of ABC to air an Add by the We Campaign. http://www.wecansolveit.org/ABC.

Think about that..think about the role of television when it comes to public interest versus commercial interests.
