Hate to say it, but it's kind of about time SoCal figure out ways of managing/attaining their water, versus draining the rest of the state. You'll have a hard time finding anyone outside of SoCal who feels differently.
The irony in what you say is that the Owens was once one of the most fertile places on the planet. L.A. drained them to suit their own needs.

Nefarious, I could debate you for hours having been involved in H2O issues for years.
SD is not LA. LA....well I can't think of one nice thing to say about it.....
We manage our Ag H2O in SD.
Iv'e been to the Central Valley and seen them FULL OUT FLOOD their fields ....nada H2O conservation, they didn't even have a fricken H2O METER.... "cause it's our H2O first". Now that's team work and trying to work together to produce the best for all.....(the color red does not look well on a neck)

Oh... SD... Well, we could strike up some interesting conversations with the folks across the border, and downstream on the CO river then. :) You know, the ones that can't grow crops at all anymore?
SoCal does get a fair portion of our water as well.
We, as with anyone else have our own water issues here. We most definitely irrigate a lot as we have more ag than any other place in the world. I grew up on 650 acres of fruit, so I definitely saw what you refer to growing up. Everyone else was doing the same then, however.

I just have to say the time I spent in California did me a great service. Made me appreciate all those great years on the Montana plains, mountains, and badlands.

I was born in the Bay Area and along with Paris, San Francisco is one of my favorite cities.
But because of the water problems they had during the 1906 earthquake, they decided to flood Hetch Hetchy. Almost as bad as what LA did to the Owens Valley.
Anyway, Chile is apparently a pretty diverse place as well, geographically, and New Zealand as well.

Funny you mention Chile, Patrick. They are one of the places showing that desalinization works well and can be cost effective. A good friend of mine was just there, courtesy of the Chilean govt. to try to talk him into opening another winery down there.

So Nefarious, remembering that we are supposed to be on the same pool team in the Fall...... : )
Besides the H20 shortage here, Mexico and South American Imports are also killing Ag in So Cal. Remember that their fruits and vegetables have caused serious illness and death in the US. They also pretty much pay their workers "nothing" with no benefits.
I have a friend that works with the Indian Camps South of the Border...the Mexes put them in god awful field worker camps that make ....sorry I can't spell it...phonetically Guantanamo Bay...look like the Hilton.
Mexico ag products are another reason SD is losing it's hold on ag. But the real question is, do you want to put this region out of business and blacktop it ?

Well, California is a big state... If you mean the Los Angeles/Southern California attitude...
We are use to being able to find anything we want at a local store within a half hour radius from us. This includes organic groceries and restaurants, fine art, horse feed, wine, etc.
(Reason #1 for the inability for some SoCal residents to cope when confronted that we can't get (&*$#) over here.)
We assume that people who are lacking teeth are addicts.
We are not afraid to cuss and we don't get shocked when hearing bad language. (Another reason why many Californians are disturbing and rude to others.)
The climate allows us to live more active outdoor lives. All sports are available to us.
In the right season you can go surfing in the morning and then hit the snow by the afternoon.
We eat food from all over the world and think that is culture. Yet we don't understand why using our left hands to a Muslim is rude.
(In the desert you can't wash you hands, water is limited. Left hand is for wiping your butt and touching dirty objects. Right hand for human contact; shaking hands, food, etc.)
To most of us, the idea of wearing a dinner jacket/evening dress in order be allowed into a high end restaurant is preposterous.
A person having a nose job or fake boobs is common.
Our genetic ancestry is diverse. The general population is not curious about our original family's social status.
We assume that clerks need to please us in order to keep their jobs. (We never can imagine a clerk being a family member of the owner unless it is a family restaurant.)
The skill to speak more than one language is common and... The average person is a college graduate.
Plus... Drums rolling...
Most waiters/waitresses are aspiring actors...
------------------------------------------------- Now Northern California is something else.
Especially near Crescent City etc...
It has a very large Native American Reservation. Most of the residents are employed by the logging company or the state jail.
Plus resort towns like Mammoth are very different from the surrounding communities.
Let us not forget that cowpoke/farming towns.
Plus everyone knows that Lancaster is just one big meth lab...

Nefarious, I really did play pool in a happening place in Laguna Beach Sat. night. I stunk....but don't let that discourage you.
The two guys I played with won and they said they would be happy to help my game. (Maybe ethanol and H2O contributed to the demise of my game.) hehe
Lettuce....we pharmacy types have to stay far away or we get cuffed by the Feds and lose our liscense . :( Go figure.
Course I could just be messin with the J. Tree heads too.

I really love it here.
But you will never see so many Cali haters anywhere else, maybe Or.
The really funny thing is most have never left the state. Manny have never left Denver
You would not believe how many have never made it up to the mountains not counting 6th grade camp.
So I was conceived in SD, born in ILL. Raised after four in SD
been gone for nineteen years and still like feel a Cali boy.
@ 53 you do the math
