Booty gear = gear intentionally left behind because of bailing, stuck, etc. Taking anything else is pretty much stealing, IMO.

Woody, sell it back to'em. Giving it back to them wouldn't be very republican of you. After all, theres no profit in giving things away!

Woody, I have a hard time believing that you wouldn't give the gear right back.

You know, it may be stupid and lame to abandon gear on top of a climb like that. But then wouldn't it also stupid and lame to spray about finding gear on a forum where the geography of users is so close to the area where the booty was found, list the gear found, and the location of the gear found and not be willing to offer it back if you find the owner.

Woody, we know you aren't stupid and lame. I'll buy you the bottle of scotch (not promising best of the best, but not awful stuff, either) when you give the dude his gear back. Shipped to your home.

wow

pretty funny how people choose to show their true colors

really kinda lame that the guy needs to have his arm twisted just to be a friendly sort, but i guess it takes all kinds.

me personally, i've soloed 5.8 to retrieve gear for people who were for whatever reason incapable of managing their own affairs, and while i've bootied gear out their, i've also posted notes and made attempts to find the original owners when it seemed like the "right thing to do".

and nobody ever had to bribe either, but then i am a "liberal", so i guess that means i like people(?), or maybe it means that i know i can still afford to make myself comfortable while not needing to go and stick it to everyone else whenever i get the chance.

Matt, be realistic...he bailed, didn't come back till 2 weeks later and he expects to get ALL of his gear back. Unrealistic.

He fu-ked up, it's the price you pay for bailing. I've done it, but I usually leave stoppers, knott cams.

live and learn.

It's booty!!

The kid is drunk and bails (stupidity)......can't find the anchors which are right in front of him (unworthy).......expects people to feel sorry for him and give it back (inflated ego).........

he's gotta learn this the hard way.......IT'S BOOTY!

Me .....

I'd just give it back to him regardless of whatever.

That's just how I'd "feel" about something like that.

in the old days we learned to hang onto our gear. we didnt ever expect to get that crap back after bailing or screwing up. we learned.

i have searched for people to return gear in those instances when it was apparent something went wrong.

but this? f***!!!!

stupid shits found a cheap ticket to an education....

Well, I'll tell you, we gave it a lot of thought: we pondered the ethical problem; we examined our consciences, we meditated, we took a vote. It all took about ten seconds, at which point we started fighting over the gear. However, thank you all for your opinions.

$250...give it back....which I'm sure you already have.

( no matter the amount, watch your communities back...even if they are less than deserving)

Under the circumstances, keeping the gear is lame. Just give it back. My own clean conscience is worth more than $250, but I suppose everyone has his price.

I've always considered (and everyone I've climbed with) that if you left it, it wasn't yours any more.

Occasional abandoned or stuck gear is the price of admission.

I've given plenty of gear back when following another party and an obviously inexperienced second was having trouble. But, geting blitzed and expecting to get abandoned (for weeks) gear back is not how the rules work.

I think you could ellicit plenty of stories from this crowd about climbs BITD involving plenty of mind altering substances and no lost gear, or at least no expectation of geting it back.

Has anybody noticed that said climber who lost gear posted up on Aug. 26. Then Woody boasts about finding gear on Aug. 27th. Considering how frequent Woody posts here on ST, his post was either highly coincidental (not likely)or highly calculated (very likely) to give all us ST'rs a much needed distraction from the highly stimulating DNC marathon (edit) and run a moral/ethics study on all us unassuming sukas! Nice work Woody! The gear is in the mail isn't it???
