A friend came out last week from CO for a week of climbing, and we went here and there. Our last day was on Hemingway Buttress, Friday. We started off on Dung Foo, got to the cave and found three stoppers and a sling. Well, okay a rap. I led to the top and brought the rest up. My friend walked over toward the rap anchors and called out "You won't believe this." There were three cams, a bunch of carabiners and a liberal collection of slings all combined for a rap under that large boulder next to the rap anchors. Now the mystery: all this gear was about eight feet from the anchors which were in plain site. As we were dividing the gear, actually fighting over it, we calculated it at around the value above. I haven't collected this much booty since, years ago, collecting a pile off The Long Climb where a party had rapped from about the fifth pitch leaving cams and nuts all the way. Thank, you, thank you. Christmas in JT on a hot muggy day.

I'm an Independent so I have more flexibility. I'm also greedy, sociopathic, an assh$le and traditional when it comes to abandoned gear, particularly under the circumstances related to this gear.

I'm with Woody on this one. Is it some badge of honor to boast about being drunk and losing sh#$? I'm not feeling the love on this one.

Edit: On second thought, Scared Silly makes a strong case! Collecting karma points is a bonus too!

Edit #2: Make it Talisker!

Naw given the timing you return the gear for karma. But the reward should be a bottle of very good single malt scotch.

Moral 1 - start drinking after finishing climbing so you do not loose your crap and have to buy someone a bottle of scotch

Moral 2 - if you find a stash of bootie keep your mouth shut if you want to keep it.

Ouch!

I dunno...is rewarding drunk climbing and (presumably) drunk driving good karma??? What kind of karma would that be anyways?

Well, it sounds like the booty was divided out to multiple people. Maybe give a cam or two back.

But if you're that wasted and can't find anchors to rap and have to leave gear, I'd say you should be happy to be unhurt...this coming from someone who loves the beers whilst climbing.

Why didn't you guys return the next day? Leaving it there that long and expecting for it back is unrealistic. Maybe Woody is feeling charitable though.

Obviously, the proper solution is for the kid to belay slave Woody in return for the booty.

So to speak.

Hey, wait, I feel a movie coming on:

In this heartwarming story of the triumph of the human spirit, a feckless, irresponsible teenage climber and a fleabitten old cragrat overcome their mutual loathing to discover a deep friendship, based on their shared alcoholism and love for homosocial outdoor activities.

I'm thinking Karate Kid meets The Hills Have Eyes.

(This counts as a copyright, by the way.)

klk, brilliant!!!

Woody could also mentor him the values of independant conservatism and lecture him on history. In the movie the young climber would rise through the political ranks and eventually lead the country as the first Independant President.

I'm getting teary eyed...

Dick Luger shot - "I dunno...is rewarding drunk climbing and (presumably) drunk driving good karma??? What kind of karma would that be anyways?"

Having to buy someone a nice bottle of single malt scotch ain't a reward in my book.

Maybe Woody would rather have a nice bottle of Tequila

But if they did drive back drunk well then may be it should be two bottles.

Good post t*r, I KNEW you could do it.

Great movie idea too!

And wooden head, given yoru political leanings, I have a real problem with you keeping hte gear, based on THIS:

" There were three cams, a bunch of carabiners and a liberal collection of slings all combined for a rap..."

See, the stuff was LIBERAL. YOU HATE LIBERAL ANYTHING.

The contradiction may be too much for you to manage.

You should either burn it, or give it back. Keeping it is out of the question. You stand at the precipice of disaster. Choose carefully, but know that your subconcious mind will be totally thrown for a loop by the dilemma.

That is if someone who is as much of a knee jerk reactionary as you are even has a mind.

Reminds me of when I was a kid:

"Finders keepers, losers weepers!"

Woody's behavior doesn't surprise me.

Its booty. Kid learned a cheap lesson and might be more careful next time if he lives.

" you shouldn't do good things just so you'll GET good things in return. lame."

I'm with you, "Be good for goodness sake!!" not being ironic. Btw, that's one of my problems with the bible/ afterlife etal, sort of thing... being 'good' best as you know how, is it's own reward... not to get perks in an alleged afterlife.

Kid needs to count his blessings. At least he knows where what used to be his sh#t ended up.

Back when I was a kid, when we lost sh#t, we never found out what happened to it.

(we kept a better eye on our sh#t, however)

He should feel honoured that his equipment will now be used by Woody.
