Ron, I also stay away from any caliber that isn't/wasn't mass produced for some military superpower. However, 7.62 NATO is getting pretty spendy, even for bulk crap.
I agree that .223, with handloads does not a poor choice make.
My dad had to shoot a deer with an AR in the '70s, and the devastation on the exit channel, spoiled so much meat, he never used the .223 for deer again. Definitely not a poor choice as a defense cartridge!
Pagan- As for that stainless mini 14, you just invested in some excellent american iron. Boy howdee, that Bill Ruger was a goddamned genius when it came to mechanical engineering and execution of design. Investment casting is nice!
I want a Ruger number one in .340 Weatherbee Mag...Some day.

Then you put an arrow in the bullet hole and stick a bow hunting tag on the rack no doubt! Huh Ouch? LOL

Ron, I been down that fork in the road. Usually took 10 or 12 at a time so didn't use many arrows.

Yeah Wildone,
I own more Rugers than any other make.
Minis, Mark II, Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk, Redhawk in .45Colt, and one of my favorite all time combos for a light patrol setup; the PC4 and P94 together with a beltload of clips that work in either, a good compromise for hicap firepower vs light weight.
Edit: How could I forget my 10-22s, including one of the guns I have that belonged to the late Mike Baker. I even have a drum mag for it.

Speaking of tack drivers, you know how sometimes you get a lemon, and sometimes you get a cherry? My dad has an early Ruger Standard "Gov't model" .22 pistol, and that thing is on fire!
Tapered barrel, not the bull, I can't remember if it's the 6 inch, or the 4.75, but that thing is SCARY accurate for a 22 pistol. Seems like all the molecules in the metal contained in that pistol were put on this earth to make a little tack driver.
It's one of those guns you wouldn't take a heap of the same model in exchange for. A real cherry. As was my dad's super blackhawk in 44mag.
We're the same way Ron. Ruger's are the top, as far as the big boys of american arms are concerned, especially for long guns. I'd like a super redhawk in 454 cassull. Or the 3 5/8 Vaquero in 45 colt. Hell of a cartridge, sweet little piece.
Have you any experience with some of their DA modern pistols? Or their over/under shotguns? I've always admired the red label...
The prices on the autos are so low, I always wonder when I see them. That P94 looks slick. Or the p90 in 45acp. Just seems so BIG though.

It's a tool.
Why do you own a car, when a bicycle will move you around just as well?

They're very effective at killing bad guys out to 250m SS.
In truth Wildone I have misgivings over the Ruger pistol's "boxy" slide, but the P94 has the nicer grips and will eat my carbine clips in a pinch.
If I want a top end pistol I go 1911.
(I even have a Marlin camp rifle that takes 1911 clips)

Pagan,
I have a Mini-14 SS with a Hogue stock, Aimtech Scout Rail with an Eotech Holosight...(I'll post pics later)
It's a pretty nice combo. The only drawback is the weight of the Mini.

Right tool for the job at hand-there's just no substitute.
Hey Ron, aren't the Romanian AK's still pretty cheap?

Osama Bunny?
LOL
The best AK is still the Gallil.
Yeah Romanians aren't TOO bad but still I stand by my statement about the day having come and gone.
The reliability of newer 5.56s has made the higher round capacity a more significant determining factor.
And the Gallil is the best of both worlds.
(OK its a bit heavy, which is why I tend to assign it to more of an in-situ defensive role.)

Come & gone may be true on the cutting edge, but still hard to beat for cost, effectiveness, & reliability in a short/mid-range application IMHO.
PS: Hey Ron,Shack, et al what's your skinny on the 75 rnd. drum? Reliable? Downsides? Seen a lot of then out there lately, but haven't got any feedback from any users.
Thanks
