Listen closely to original Irish and Scottish Highland music and you will hear the beginning of it all.

I take part in an area bluegrass jam the first Saturday of each month. It's absolutely incredible the kind of talent that is revealed during these things. I play mandolin in them, and am in awe of the locals who--in contrast to me--run over the frets like butta! You might never hear about them, but they really are masters in their own right.

DMT, great post.
I think its also part of the hippie conversion process. Most mountain hippies were the children of affluent parents. Part of re-creating your identity as a mtn hippie, is connecting with all things natural (i.e., jug bands, playing the spoons and harmonica). Natural powered like Dingus says... Hate TV? Well theres a good chance you can stand listening to Bluegrass.
One of the quickest ways to becoming a mtn hippie, is pretending your broke and from the south.

Some old souls in a dusty mountain bar telling a story over stings.
Bluegrass for me is about the music, the setting, and the smiles.

Because bluegrass goes so damn well with a bonfire, beers, a cig or two, under a sky full of stars!
Like pasta and pasta sauce, they just go well together.

Portland folks, check out my friend Aaron's bluegrass band, "The Loafers". They play in the Portland area regularly and are really fun to see live.
Music samples here:

Bluegrass Rules!!!
[Edit] Aaron is also a hell of a juggler! He can put down the guitar, pick up four clubs and throw you Hawaiian Toe throw like you never dreamed possible. (I know most of you have no idea what a Hawaiian Toe throw is, but rest assured, Aaron is the master of it)

The best way to get mountain hippie cred is, evidently, driving from Pacific Palisades, CA, to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in a Range Rover.

DMT--More messin':
Cobblestone Mountain it was made by hand
from the magic and the mortar of a
cobblestone man.
Cobblestone Mountain it was laid by hand
from the magic and the mortar in a
cobblestone land.
Magic and the mortar in a cobblestone land.
Listen to me children here's a riddle
and a rhyme
bout a man who built a mountain that the
angels couldn't climb
He built it with the skill and the magic
that he learned
When he found the holy river and the
river boat burned.
Listen to me children here's a word to the wise
I got it from the man with the cobblestone eyes
Take it with a chuckle or a grain of salt
But if the cobblestone buckles
then it's all your own fault.

Back when I was a cop, I was hangin out at the jail, listening to the Sheriff and some trusties pickiing banjos and mandolins and trying to sing. Someone mentioned they needed a fiddler. One guy asked if old John Brazeale was back from up north. They decided it was worth a trip over on Sugar Limb to find out. They picked up a couple of confiscated Mason Jars and loaded up 2 cars and lit out. I went about my rounds and dropped in at the jail a few hours later. When I got out of my car, the sounds coming from the jail sounded like the Grand "Ol Opry. I stood outside and heard the damndest rendition of Orange Blossom Special I ever heard. I went into the kitchen and cooked everyone a batch of fried bologna, speckled gravy, and toast. The Sheriff put 'Ol John up in a comfortable cell with all the confiscated shine he needed and six months later he was
still there. That old man could make that fiddle talk. I miss those old days and that pure homemade music.

Hippys like bluegrass cause when you are young and all furry, the only way to get laid is to 'dig' the music the furry (underarm ect) chicks dig. Plus...Jerry dug Bluegrass and there is no substute for the Hills accent.

What a great story, Ouch! Damn!
DMT--Is that song on any of their albums? I love the Mens Room Acoustics backstory.
One more just for you--Time Warp:
Like Houdini in the river with a lock he couldn't see
When you think you hit the bottom then you better find the key
Like Custer at the Horn when he turned around and said,
"When you think you finally got'em, you're just as good as dead"
It's a time warp, puttin' wrinkles in your skin
It's a rockabilly music make you silly in the end
It's a time warp, puttin' circle on your eyes
It's a rockabilly music that's a blessing in disguise.
Like Buddha at the sermon when he didn't say a word
If you think you hear a flower, it's a flower that you heard
Like Da Vince on the roof with his arm in a sling
"A man's got the power, but a bird's got the wing."

Judy, is that you with Dr. Ralph Stanley?
Though I've been considered a hippie for many many years I've never been much of a bluegrass fan. A few months ago I had the opportunity to go to a Dr. Ralph Stanley show at the Orphium. It was an amazing show. Though it didn't make me any more of a fan it did make me appreciate that kind of music that much more. That guy was simply amazing. Go Ralph!

Yo DMT... yeah, I think that's what it is. IT all sorta blends together for me. Not sure why. Just the way that it is. IT wasn't that way at the Ralph Stanley show though. That he was about to turn 80 and had been doing the bluegrass thing for 50+ (?) years did make a diff for me - impressive!
I was vending sushi last year at a three day bluegrass event. Though I didn't really get tired of the music or anything it never really "hit" me. Of course, the same acts played each day which is really a dumb idea no matter what the music type. It was a good time.

it might be easier to get into BG if you actually play, even if just pecking out notes here & there. But then again, one of favorite instruments ever is dobro... and I have yet to get my hands on one.
Hopefully I'll get to see Jerry Douglas w/ Alison Krauss/Union Station this week!!!
