I dont disagree that Al Gore is far from a good example of what it takes to reduce ones impact on natural resource depletion. My problem is when people resist change, they immediately pry for petty weaknesses tangent to the real issue at hand.

I'd like to hear both sides of the story but, like a fool, it doesn't seem like Al has made his case yet.
I know my Dad had a gas bill of almost $500 last month. Electricity is extra. That's for a household of 2 living like old people. Gotta figure that high profile people have a lot of folks around and more space.
Of course the White House electricity bill would be astronomically higher. That's not comparing appples to apples but comparing Gore's bill to ours is similarly flawed.

Chaz's analogy is good until the point when he runs out of money to pay folks to pick up trash. Then he forfeits his privelege of dumping elsewhere.
If you or your business has endless funds to compensate for dumping then dump away. But those with limited capital might find a cheaper alternative to buying the right to dump.
If a utility company has to pay higher and higher prices to continue emitting carbon, they might instead install scrubbers or invest in new technology that will save money and emissions in the long run.
Attacking Gore for not taking every conceivable measure for reducing his carbon footprint is unreasonable. If you're in favor or an advocate of bike lanes is it a moral imperative that you drive your bike on the 405 freeway on your daily commute?

Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
But when Thomas Jefferson penned those words he was a slave holder! Does this mean we tear up the Declaration of Independence?
Should we just write Thomas Jefferson off as a hypocrite? Or should we applaud him for rising above his time and taking a position contrary to his own self-interest?
Almost all of us are hypocrites in the since that very few of us come close to meeting the ideals we espouse. But that does not make the ideals anymore noble.
I liked the Upton Sinclair quote used in the film promos: "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." It's also difficult to get people to understand something when their style of living depends on it.
It's easy for some college student living in a dorm and driving a Dad-provided Honda Civic to advocate conservation. But it really gives me hope when someone driving a hummer or living in a huge mansion "gets it."

First of all, are ya'll so sure this bill is just for Al's house that just he and his immediate family live in, or is it also a home office where there is a staff that attends to the various works that Al is working on? A fair sized space in a hot climate where there are people continually burns up a lot more that just mom and pop living in a regular house.
Second, Lois, There is a big difference between these credits and indulgences. Indulgences were just empty promises by the church, The credits are real money that go into real projects that actual impact the environment and reverse some of the damage done inevitiably by our lifestyles. Pay up yourself before calling Al a Hypocrite.
This seems like a smear job. Do you really think Al leaves the Air conditioning on with the windows open when nobody's home. Dig a little deeper and lets see why the bill is high.
