He was an interesting study in a warrior and a nice guy to boot. We worked with him on a few stories when I was with Rifleman Magazine.

Vasily Zaytsev, the "hero" character in Enemy at the Gates is said to have had over 400 confirmed kills to his name by the end of the second world war.
However, his is a good exampe of how number of kills isn't the best indication of how "good" a sniper is: although he was undoubtedly a fine shot and was ahead of his time in his techniques for concealment and movement, it should be remembered that he was fighting in the battle of Stalingrad - an urban conflict during which the whole area was pretty much crawling with enemies, making very high kill counts common.

Again, it wasn't about Carlos record but what he did to get those shots.
Absolutely amazing and very balls.
The problem is that we are unendated with movies that have guys sneaking around with no problem to get hits. But in reality it is something that is very difficult and very very scary. No one wants to die.
My respect to all who are fighting and my regret that they have to. I hope that some day there will be some justice for those who have had to die for oil and war profiteering.

All above is very impressive, however, not impressive enough. As a youth, in the vast no-man's land of a city dump, near my home, I, on numerous occasions, would lie in wait with my Diasy pump, and, with astounding patience, would take out lizards at the incredible range of fifty feet. I feel some remorse now; however, all those little heads lined up on my wall above the fireplace still engender a thrill. The skill acquired in that dump served me well in later BB gun battles; and, for that, I feel no remorse.

Nor will you.
You won't even hear the shot.

BMG?
What muzzle velocities are we talking about?
They must be very high for the 1 mile shoots.
At a mile would they here the gun after a miss allowing another shot?

I can't remember the muzzle velocities.
same as an M60. Look that up.
It also has to do with the type of round, weight and rifling.

After a mile of flight how much velocity has been lost?

I'll bet it's below 100fps for a 180g boattail.

MY BROTHER HAS BEEN TO IRAQ 3 TIMES, AND WAS AWARDED TOP GUN AT SNIPER SCHOOL FOR THE ARMY. EASILY ONE OF THE TOP TEN SNIPERS IN THE ARMY TODAY. HE SAYS HE CAN SHOOT A GNAT OFF OF A CAMELS A$$, AT 1500 YARDS. OOPS... FORGOT TO MENTION, TWO BRONZE STARS FOR VALOR, IN LESS THAN TWO YEARS.

Give us the lowdown on what he rifle he uses, etc.
Tell him to make sure and get his butt home safe.
Edit: I guess a shot at 1500 yards must mean he's using a 50 cal?

Wild Bill,
That was one freaky video! I thought the guy was shooting at rocks until the body parts begin flying! The projectiles, I think, are traveling faster than mach 1. So you could be talking to your bud one moment, then have his guts all over you the next and not even hear the gun sound for a few seconds.
What's the equation, F = mV^2 ? My only questions are: What's the mass of the projectile? And what's the velocity of the projectile? Because those bodies fly awfully far.
Glad no one has their crosshair on me.... Gotta go close those window blinds. Later.

Of course the velocity is above mach one. Only a few types of ammunition, mostly designed for silenced operation, have speeds slower than sound.
I have read that the 50 bmg guys are using depleted uranium rounds, and that with these rounds they don't necessarily have to make a direct hit on their target. For example if the shot misses by a foot over the shoulder but hits a rock wall 2 feet behind the guy goes flying in pieces anyway. Anyone know more on this?
