What do they call those little wooded popsicle type sticks they use when the look in your mouth and want you to Ahhh?
They charge you $5.00 or more now each when they use them.
They come in a box of 100.
A theoretical $450 dollars profit on a box of wooded popsicle sticks ....?

Tongue depressors cost $450.00 a box because the gross materialistic carnivores are clear cutting the Amazon rain forests to grow cows for Micky D creating a shortage of lumber for tongue depressor factories...Every Happy Meal sale increases the cost of a helo rescue...

The enormous disconnect in the room teeth are coming in and soon it will bite everyone's ass.

Having come from a family of doctors, I was schooled early that equating money with life saving was bad form. So yes, you cannot put a price on saving people, but one should not use that to hold people hostage for absurd fees. And helicopter and medical costs are some of the worst offenders per price gouging. The only people justifying the are those profiting from same - and they will always use the argument that "your life was worth it."
The Hippocratic Oath had at it's core the idea that people involved in saving lives should by nature be humanitarians first, and capitalists second. That anything else is a violation of humanity in some basic way. When the equation is flipped, you end up paying 1,450 dollars for an ambulance ride from the climbing gym to the hospital (2 miles) - which I did.

Most people don't know that you can refuse air ambulance service, if your injuries don't make it necessary. The folks in charge will make it seem like you don't have an option. You do. Press the issue. Ask if ground transportation is sufficient. It really pisses them off to have their directives redirected.

We should be clear to praise all of those in live-saving roles who work tirelessly to relieve suffering and provide an invaluable service. My only point is that when a person in extreme duress is seen as a business opportunity and is charged rates that would NEVER otherwise fly in the free market, we seeing the baser tendencies of humanity.

In all fairness helos are bloody expensive. A new Bell 206L tricked out
for medevac will be north of $2 million. At $20K per medevac that would
take probably 200 medevacs to be paid off in what, a year or two? Hmmmm,
maybe it is a good investment after all. Of course, insurance is close
to astronomical so it might take 300 missions to pay it off in 2-3 years.
Most equipment purchases of that magnitude have a 5-10 year depreciation
so you could pay the thing off in 3 and continue to 'depreciate' it for
7 more years! SUWEET!
