"This thread should be renamed "Dean Potter and Graham Hunt Accident.""

This thread needs to be nuked, restarted, and renamed, and without the sniping bullshit posts regarding ST's thread functionalities and who should say what.

A couple of humans died yesterday who deserve much more than this. There are an awful lot of people who are dealing with a lot of pain related to this right now, and this kind of self-centered yapping is tremendously disrespectful.

Seems like a much better place for condolences and stories.

Graham deserves one too.

I know nothing of base jumping, but my understanding is that Taft point is pretty regularly jumped.

JLP, I don't know a lot about BASE either, but as Heisenberg on the deleted thread may have alluded to, I'd guess Dean and Graham were proximity wingsuit flying and on a similar trajectory, which did not clear the notch.

Very sad news.

I also know nothing about base jumping but the first thing that came to my mind is that a cold air downdraft may have been pouring into the valley off the snow covered hills above.... thus screwing up their line. In any case a sad day.

hellroaring and brotherbbock, and anyone else that is assuming that I was in a rush to post something this horrific. I NEVER post anything on this site. I personally knew Dean and know a lot of his friends. I am in shock and my heart aches of his passing. I simply put on the post what I was feeling, just like all of you who post on here. I did get Dean's name right but heard wrong on Graham and said Grant, which I did not put a last name, and I then corrected it. I came to the site originally to see what was posted and make my condolences. I think for anyone to tell another person what is wrong and cannot say something on this site is full of themselves...Everyone is hurt and deals with tragedy in a different way. If anyone has a problem with it, contact me personally and not Ammon. He had nothing to do with my post...At least have the courage to do that.

This is about friends loosing their life...not about us and your squibbles.. I will not be a part of this or posting again.

Don't worry about it Ammon's Mom. People bicker everyday here and I respect that you felt the need to delete your post if the family requested it. Welcome to Supertopo. Sorry for your loss.

Hi Ammon and Gabe's Mom

Ignore the fools who criticized you.

It's an honor to have you (Ammon and Gabe's Mom) to be posting here and I personally know how you feel as a Mother to your two fine boys/men Ammon & Gabe ....

I third (or by the time this posts, I fourth) what Werner said.

Some avatar had to criticize so it/they could feel superior. Ignore it.

Different people deal with grief differently. I don't think normal people misjudged your motives.

The link to the NPS thread is particularly damning. It's probably best not discussed here, but the internet disinhibitive effect really shows its teeth in that link. Nonetheless, it's interesting to see the different responses to risk and risk takers. It's also nice to see that many here on this forum have at least outwardly withheld judgment in favor of tribute to the deceased.

In that vein: RIP.

Yep, that imgur link (screenshots of a closed NPS employee facebook group) contains some harsh language.

And this should be no surprise. To wit, there's plenty of damning statements here on ST as well.

Thanks to Chris for resuscitating the other thread. It's sad, but also reality, that there will be a primary discussion, and a meta one.

Pretty hard to get my head around these two young men leaving us. I ache for their family and friends.

As far as Gabe and Ammon's Mom. I got to meet her when we visited Ammon in the GJ hospital after Ammon's accident. She is one of the loveliest and most gracious Mom's I've ever met. It was very hurtful to see such barbs directed at her. I can only imagine the grief she is suffering from Dean's and Graham's loss. Awful close to home.

Ammon's mom,

Not sure why people are so rude, maybe they just didn't realize who Ammon or Gabe even are. Both awesome people by the way.

I fondly remember soloing with Ammon, Dean, and Austin over 10 years ago on some route Dean could solo blindfolded. Well, Dean hip belayed Austin on some micro rap line. I was terrified, it was so hot, I was sweating like crazy, but hell it was with Dean Potter. I was just talking about it a few weeks ago, like it was yesterday.

Like so many others, I thought Dean was almost above death. He was that amazing. I always sucked at climbing compared to him, but he was sure fun to hang out with. His personality was much larger than any words on here will convey.
