I is what I is. I fell into everything in life, no master plan I prefer to feel my way along, trusting intuition, smarts, a gentle touch, a strong back and a very tough hide.

I'm a f*#k up in other words. But I land on my feet most of the time. Thus my ankles, feet and back have born the brunt of my mistakes.

Kindred spirits. :-)

Edit: I've landed on my back, ass, and head a few times in the process.

Another f*#k up here. Never completed all the courses required for graduation, but waltzed on in to college a couple years later on the basis of high GED scores. I now have more university credits than high school credits.

My family moved around a lot so it was difficult to finish high school, especially since I had already started climbing and backpacking. I barely got through it, and was really hating it - Stoney Point was where the action was! I got far enough to say I'm a college drop out though. College drop-outs can at least say they are in good company........with these folks;

I'm with Greg, if I had been graded on tests and in class work, I would have been near the top of my class. But, I hated homework. Skiing, climbing, and being lazy kept me from doing homework. I graduated with a 2.3 GPA but got a 1290 on my SAT without any preparation.

In retrospect, part of me wishes I'd attended college, but most of me appreciates that I didn't. I chose trade work, carpentry specifically, and it's still what I love to do. No need for a degree, or even a GED to pursue this trade. Intelligence is key, but a piece of paper doesn't make you intelligent.

We all have different paths, it's nice to hear that not all of us here are overachieving PHD's

I was lucky i got to go to college where the idea was to think outside the book and see things from all sorts of angles. Somehow I managed to graduate higher ed with a gpa of 3.75 but in the end i wish i had gone Survivals route. Not many regrets but thats one i do have.

wow, a 3.75 GPA in college

seriously, well done sir!

Tried to drop out, but my dad wouldn't let me. When it came time to take the SATs, I filled in the answer sheet bubbles in nice patterns. Dad still found a way to exile me to my grandparents in SoDak and enrolled me in the 2nd from the bottom of the list of US universities. Dakota Wesleyan- Pride of the Prarie! (George McGovern graduated from there, so I guess it wasn't all bad)

Bailed outta there and followed the Dead for a year. Had a blast. Then a family tragedy brought me home and I began to see the benefit of an education.

Ended up rising to my current level of incompetence with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.

Just goes to show it's never too late to get your learnin' on.

i think that credentials mean far too much to most people.

and Larry you are totally right about fed jobs barring able and willing candidates because they lack a relatively meaningless piece of paper

I'm willing to call your bluff--If dropping out is such a great thing- How many people here are going to encourage that their children leave school?
I've seen many kids not finish school and for the most part their story was not happily ever after.
To quote a friend of mine "I didn't make the rules" but if you opt out you are not doing yourself any favors.
Easy to blame the teacher, the system, the girl who broke your heart, the media--Just plain easy to blame. At some point you got to buck up and deliver. Society rewards the obvious- Life rewards the persistent.
I'm wrapping up 30 years of teaching and at the end of my career I am not convinced of the value of our emphasis on content and facts. Skills are what are needed but to learn them is not cheap or easy. Nor is learning how to think for oneself easy. I got no answers as I'm still trying to learn how to do it.

I dropped out in the 11th grade. Worked for a while, then took the GED. Eventually wound up with a BS in chemistry and a PhD in engineering.
I reckon that might surprise some of those f*#king teachers I had.

For me, and for many(I think) high school is/was not conducive to learning. a teacher must make an effort to make learning interesting. Having a 4.0 GPA doesn't necessarily make one smart.

I enjoyed college a hell of a lot more than I did high school.
