Dig a big hole in the back yard & put in a nice(KUBOTA) diesel generator. Then, install a bunch of solar panels up on the roof(MOST STATES LET YOU WRITE OFF ALL NATURAL POWER).Finally, call your local public service company & tell them to f*#k off.rg

I'll bet a big reason California scores best in lowest per capita energy use is the "Clown House" phenomenon.

Real estate is so expensive sometimes two or three dozen low income people will share the same two bedroom, one bathroom house.

One light bulb for thirty people will really improve the numbers.

This is not due to low-income immigrants, illegal or otherwise. They don't have the money to spend on AC, etc.
It's the middle and upper-middle in their McMansions out in the hot exurbs far from the coast. They run AC, computers, big plasma TVs, all that fun stuff, alot more than 30 years ago.

It could also have to do with the fact that most of CA needs no heating or cooling for a good part of the year. Folks down here are running AC for probably 6 months out of the year.

Forest, YOU are the ones who need to cut your per-capita energy use.

You Arizona guys need to be more like us Californians.

Green Up, man!

I'm burning it up like there's no tomorrow!

But we can afford to, Californians use less electricity (per capita) than any other Americans.

Tom--

"It's hard to say that the United States is at a disadvantage because there are people from all over the world who move here and contribute. "

I don't think anyone has a problem with this. I think what people have a problem with is the hordes that are here that, not only do *not* contribute, but suck as much $$$ out of us as possible.

The fun is only starting. Bringing a big baseload plant online is at least a ten year project. Major transmission lines not much less and even new distribution lines have to overcome major hurdles in siting.

Gonna have to be some major tradeoffs or else.

Ouch! is right.

And if they do not get this stuff done soon, everybody and his brother will be running their own diesel generators.

At which point, CA will have the lowest emission cars and the highest emission back yards and roofs and the lowest per capita energy use - or maybe not, since they can then use as much as they want ;).

Hey Juan, want to get together and work on a family size nuke plant?

DMT, actually tonight it's Gatorade for me.

What are you drinking?

And what percentage of California's average import is 500 Megawatts?

Yesterday the peak was over 50,000 Megawatts. How much did they have to import? How much was "voluntarily" not used? And when they hit Phase 2 Emergency, how much was just plain shut off?

And what are these fellows drinking - See pages 5-8

See 2005 California Power Plants Database

If you sort the California Power Plants Database spreadsheet by Megawatts Online descending, and then sort only those of 500MW or greater, you can get this distribution by sorting Year On-line.

Summary below for those who won't bother to look at the link.
2000-2003 ( 6) none in 2000 and most recent is 2005 including all
 1990-1999 ( 0)
 1980-1989 ( 3)
 1970-1979 ( 3)
 1960-1969 (10)
 1950-1959 ( 7)
 1940-1949 ( 2)

Total 31 plants with capacity of about 33,580 Megawatts.

You can go down to 300 MW plants and pick up a few more in the 80s and 1 in 2001.

So it would have been correct in 2000 to say that none had been built in the last 10 years.

(I know, facts are boring.) Anyway it was striking to see the usage drop below projected after the Stage 1 announcement. Did not look at what happened after Stage 2. But somewhere in this thread or the other one points out the importance of intentional interruption of service is and you can also see how much they expect (MW) that contributes to keeping everybody out of Stage 3 (rolling blackouts).
