I had a Holubar bag, and some other gear. I totally forgot about the company. Thanks for the update.

Wickedly cool thread. Thanks Steve.
The evolution of both the climbing gear and the climbing business is a fascinating subject.

I think that leather came first and switched to fabric straps after WW II as they were lighter and much easier to repair on a climb. Most fabric strap that I have seen are cotton. How do you arrive at hemp?
Thanks - cotton it must be. I didn't smoke any to actually find out which it was made of ; )
I do have a long axe from 1920/30 and it has a cotton leash...I used to have a few pairs of Austrian crampons made for Swiss military that had cotton straps and were stamped with early 1940s dates...
so sounds like WWII-ish time frame.
Thanks for the help!

How was cotton kept from freezing when wet? Oil? Wax?

Thought I'd add images of the 1960 - 61 Catalog
Only a select number of pages but there is an early Chouinard biner but no pins listed

dustyrat- Fabulous addition to this thread!
Thank you very much for contributing.
How did you acquire this catalog so far away?

Hi Steve
Not sure, as I discussed via email I've lots of stuff acquired over the last twenty years, UK and US manufacturers and retailers brochures, posters, engineering drawings and vintage gear.

Looks like the Chouinard rigid crampons borrowed heavily from the right- most ones pictured in the catalog.

That 1954 catalogue was state-of-the-art a year after I started climbing. At my first year at Ga Tech I cut out the photo of the Maiden and put it in a frame on the wall of my dormitory room.

Very cool story John.
Had you been out to Boulder at that point?

Yes, that summer, and I had climbed the Maiden on that trip. What a neat rock!

Great gear thread! thanks Steve.
About the Bhend axe and crampons? Bruno made no mention of even seeing the crampons in the shop these days. I'll check in myself this winter.
First axe up Everest and the Eiger :-) Gotta be more to that crampon story.
