Yosemite has exclusive jurisdiction - meaning federal laws apply, not California laws. Only federal agents, primarily NPS rangers have authority and enforce the laws they want. By contrast, Grand Canyon has concurrent jurisdiction and the Coconino County Sheriff gets to take over any investigation, search or rescue he wants. The NPS at Grand Canyon has to inform the Coconino Sheriff of all major incidents. If I can remember back 35 years, Yellowstone is the only other National Park with exclusive jurisdiction. The table of arrests might reflect the different types of jurisdiction in the parks listed...

When I was an evil Valley Ranger 35+ years ago, there was a huge emphasis on busting people for drug use. I felt there was not enough emphasis on busting people wrecking the natural resources or on violent crime, especially rape & sexual assault.

It is all very confusing and travelers never consider jurisdictional changes and how they should alter their behavior.

Thankfully long gone from the world on NPS LEO

LEOs get bored, their bosses get hard-ons, and campers get stoned and stupid.

For whatever reasons that they are upping the heat, it's a shame they have to target the ones who pay to enter the Park (virtually everyone). It seems kind of unfair of the Feds, but they're Feds, so give it up.

They should drop the penalties to probation only. They (NPS) don't need the piddly amount they get from fines and don't let them tell you different. And don't anybody tell me different. You know I'll just duck it, cuz I hate arguing on the net. If you can PROVE the NPS is suffering from money problems THAT much, OK.

All we climbers and lurkers have to do is to take care of our own selves when we are in LEO's yard.

Which means look both ways and, like Davey Crockett said, make sure you're right, then go ahead.

There are lovely places in the taluses to doob it--why smoke on the valley floor?

And at risk of hypocrisy, how can anyone be so lame as to smoke in their vehicle while on the road in the Park nowadays? Of course I used to do it, but we were all young, dumb, etc., and the scene was much different.

So despite Werner's assertion to Donini that it's all the same in Yosemite Valley, I beg to differ in this social aspect. But it is the same old dirt and trash and so forth.

we didn't get to hear the whole comment, but I am sure he was not talking about the environment of park rangers on the prowl looking for anything with which to get an arrest. Drugs is up, but not at all due to the laws changing over the last 20 years, and the park rangers are still scrambling to get as much money from the feds as possible sooner rather than later because short sightedness is rampant in the NPS LEO departments...

(just never mind the percentage of "drug" crimes reported have anything to do with the legal limbo that medical marijuana patience have to deal with if they choose to visit the wonderful park with the large gang of park rangers on patrol)

Give them a gun...

Give them a vest... and Done.

I have a MMA card... it gives me no extra freedoms.... it could potentially tag me as the one to investigate if a ranger ever found out I was...

Am I supposed to trust NPS LEO?

Pardon me if I prefer to skip the sights until they figure that whole freedom to move about without being accosted by LEO for having a card on my person...

I'd already mentioned my experience of getting tooled on Tioga, on my way to, and returning from, SFO. Pulled over, I was asked if I “was carrying MJ or firearms.” I was so surprised by the direct question that I didn't even have to think twice to decline their following request to search my vehicle.

I never made the connection between the Cali MMC and Federale jurisdictions – now I see.

I was in UT a few weekends ago...I didn't get pulled over. Was in Yosemite just before and was not pulled over. It's safe out there - go have fun but do it on the DL!

Are they also combining the busts with civil forfeitures? (total bullshit) I though that the feds were going to stop with the pot prosecutions, but they might have only publicized that to make it easy to bust folks. They always go after the easy pickin's, so if you have Colo or Wash plates, might want to reconsider carrying mj into the valley. And always say "NO, I don not consent to my vehicle being searched." Especially if you are clean.
