Sub-header:
The Investigative Unit’s Elyce Kirchner uncovers citations and arrests for drug-related issues in Yosemite climbing over the past five years and compares those numbers to other popular national parks.
So does this mean there are drug-related issues amongst Yosemite climbers? Or does this mean the frequency of drug-related issues is increasing?
Hard to say from the nebulous writing; but there is more climbing in Yosemite than the average national park, so be careful before making statistical inferences.

No it is not good journalism by any means. It appears with the proliferation of legal and medicinal weed on the state level, the Feds are still enforcing their stance on the issue. Has to be a good money maker for the gov't with the fines paid.
Sequester budget cuts....naggh just search the hippies.

Pot laws in CA and CO have made traveling in the parks or in NV and UT horrible if you have plates from either state. Friends have been pulled over for turning their blinker on 3 seconds before turning, which is apparently not long enough... or going 10 UNDER the speed limit... or simply fitting the profile of a drug dealer (which is apparently anyone under 40 in an SUV, van, or lezbaru wagon with CA or CO plates)... always looking for the marijuanas.

Wes, your description of a profile of a drug dealer is wrong. I was stopped in Arizona in 2006,
I am over forty, and at the time was driving a Honda Civic
So, be careful in Utah, and Arizona

The Investigative Unit discovered that national park rangers have detected a rising use of narcotics in the typically family-friendly park over the past five years.
Umm, yeah.....NOT!

that is one fine piece of vintage-like hysteria. my favorite line, spoken with importance near the end:
"malcolm morgan doesn't really care why there are more drug issues here, he just wants the narcotics to stay away from young campers, ... [pause for effect and lower voice] ... like his eleven year old daughter."
hahaha.

i wonder if yosemites unique federal status, compared to most parks, has anything to do with this. i know this subject came up in another thread.

It figures that the cops in Yosemite primarily bust people for pot. The NPS budget should be cut as much as possible, to eliminate these as#@&%es. I hope the environmentalists are successful, too, in rolling back the development and returning Yosemite to a more natural state.

I like the irony that your average climber who smokes weed has 10% body fat, while the typical RV touron is a pasty fat-ass from the midwest who will cost the health care system a lot more.
If I were a LEO, I would bust people for drinking sodas and fast food.
