Both I, and my daughter, have been tooled per the OP, on separate occasions.
To jump to the punchline, it's our speculation that there are growers on the Westside (much like on the Eastside), and Tioga is a transport route for the goods.
My own experience dates to 2007. I was on my way from Bishop to meet the rest of our team at SFO, for the first leg of the several flights which would deposit us to Spitzbergen (actually, at about 74 North Latitude, the easiest area, of the High Arctic to reach, with 3 SAS commercial flights from Oslo weekly) – from there a chartered Twin Otter ($3,000/hr, if memory serves), to get us to Base Camp above 83N via a layover at Station Nord, a Danish military/scientific outpost which is also home to the winter's Sirius Patrol.
Running a bit late, as usual, I was caught dead to rights speeding on the Sunshine Curve, by a Park Danger headed eastbound. So, I immediately slowed down, and waited for him at the Lembert parking lot. Where I was promptly boxed into a pull-in stall, a position you might want to avoid placing yourself in.
I offered a nice apology, and waited for the expected citation.
But, to my complete surprise, he asked if any pot or firearms were on board. I declined, but noticed he'd been joined by another LEO; from the vantage of a Jeep's passenger seat, all I could make out was a gigantic belt buckle.
“Do you mind if we search your car?”
I almost gave into a sense of expediency...but thought twice about it, and asserted my right to decline – a traffic stop for speeding does not constitute probable cause to search a vehicle for contraband.
The ticket was issued with the strong approbation to take care of it before I left for Greenland (Yessir!), on a flight scheduled to depart in about 6 hours.
Then, he asked me if I was planning to climb Lembert!??
It's a good thing I refused a search. This being my wife's ride, I was to later discover a few “leftovers” in the ashtray. On my person was some paraphernalia of a significantly more controversial nature, which I'd forgotten about.
Furthermore, some time later, my daughter and b/f were eastbound on Tioga from SF, when they were pulled over for one thing or another. They consented to a search, which was to detain them for more then 2 hours, as their car was completely tooled: door panels, vent ducts, the full deal. Finally, about a gram of what was alfalfa from our little ranchette was unearthed, and charges levied. My daughter successfully fought it before the Park Magistrate.
Other then the opening speculation, not sure what's up with this disturbing new trend in the Park. I mean other than our continuing transfiguration into a police state – most evidenced on the Eastside.
And yes, climbers are most definitely profiled.
BTW, I had the same experience when returning back from expedition. A ranger was making up his mind about which way to turn on 120 from the sequoia grove. Naturally, as luck would have it, he chose to fall in behind me. This meant sticking to the 35 mph zone which goes for quite a few miles, hard to do. By the time we had 6 cars trailing us, I opted for a turnout. Within a few minutes, he'd “flipped a bitch” with a 180, and I had company. This guy, unlike the first ranger, was well along in years. Not one to stand on ceremony, he simply opened the passenger door for a quick look see around.

I went to look on the SuperTouron site to see if I could find similar stories among the population at large. Not only could I not find any stories, I couldn't even find the site.
It would be interesting to find out how many stops are made in a week and the proportion that are dope-smoking, gun-wielding climbers being accosted.
Anyway, I thought guns were legal in the National Parks. Didn't I read that somewhere?

Kabala, I would have been a whole new level of pissed off if they ripped apart my car like your daughter's. That is ridiculous! I hope they put it back together correctly.

Just reminded me of something.
The last tool that tooled me in Tuolumne ended up neck deep in icy muddy creek water on the walk back to my car.
Made my day.
Jeez I forgot I got tooled this spring too..no instant karma on that one though.
My reply to the search question.. no.. why not? my answer "I'm oldschool I guess." also I worked in "wouldn't want to waste your time. I'm sure we both have better things to do."
Didnt get to use the "How would you feel about strangers going through your vehicle?"

Never have smoked weed, and don't intend to. However, I used to have a pouch full of cocaine on my belt (or so the cop was convinced).

I'm not in the loop of any information except supertopo but I never hear about the Rangers getting large amounts of weed except when they find people actually growing on part lands. I think they have one ranger that just hikes around peripheral areas looking for grows during some seasons>
The real problem is that Rangers sometimes see their jobs as catching criminals and there's so little crime in Yosemite. The "best" they can hope for is a little bust for Weed, DUI or Base Jumping. It's too bad they can't just accept they are peacekeepers in a peaceful place and just help people out everywhere. Sometimes I get Paranoid that in the fall, when they might be facing seasonal layoffs, they get tougher so it looks like they are needed longer.
Still, I've found that a gentle friendly attitude has brought out the good in them, and had lots of positive encounters. Gotta tell the truth both ways
Peace

Seems to be a recent pattern. My son and his wife were pulled over for "speeding" [they weren't] and pulled out of the car and illegally searched. This is a straight arrow couple [married she-a microbiologist he a full time student] who just happened to be young. Not a good sign that park rangers are this bored. A complaint has been filed.

Kabalas explanation makes some sense. Supposedly CA plates will get you searched in the Midwest. Scruffy looking Swm + beater car = tooling

yeah, i got tooled recently, to the tune of $1000, but i should get it dismissed. search was totally bogus.
realize that if you get tooled in the meadows, those guys are mostly seasonal, and that if you fight it, they got to bring in these officers from wherever they are in the winter. its a lot a bargaining power.
i've tooled the tool before and i'll tool them again, because the tools are fools. ss

The year is '94 and in my trunk is raw
In my rear view mirror is the mother f*#king law
I got two choices yall pull over the car or
bounce on the double put the pedal to the floor
Now I ain't trying to see no highway chase with jake
Plus I got a few dollars I can fight the case
So I...pull over to the side of the road
And I heard "Son do you know why I'm stopping you for?"
Cause I'm young and I'm black and my hat's real low
Do I look like a mind reader sir, I don't know
Am I under arrest or should I guess some mo?
"Well you was doing fifty five in a fifty four"
"License and registration and step out of the car"
"Are you carrying a weapon on you I know a lot of you are"
I ain't stepping out of sh#t all my papers legit
"Do you mind if I look round the car a little bit?"
Well my glove compartment is locked so is the trunk and the back
And I know my rights so you gon' need a warrant for that
"Aren't you sharp as a tack are some type of lawyer or something?"
"Or somebody important or something?"
Nah I ain't passed the bar but I know a little bit
Enough that you won't illegally search my sh#t
you got 99 problems but that tool ain't one

And all those awesome little dig-me stickers that you get at the events from 5.10 and whatnot are like little neon signs for the tool..
Sad tales in this thread. While in some cases I can see their side of things, in most cases it's just "I have a badge and a small dick" syndrome.
Always stick up for your rights and don't give them permission for a damned thing.

Awh Sh^^t man,
I was driving down I15 to Zion in a snow storm. There was this a%%hole plow driver plowing snow up and over the median and into the on coming lane. I had no choice but to close my eyes and hope for the best. Blew my driver's side wiper off and took out my driver's side headlamp.
I felt lucky. Got a new wiper 15 miles later while driving with my head stuck out the window so I could see. Good thing I was used to white out conditions. No deal on the headlamp. 15 minutes in Zion...Trouble Bubble! Missing headlight. Told him the story...
I just got a ticket for the missing headlamp but much sniffin' for no reason. Really???
F%^ck that blankeddy blank.
Welcome to Zion!
Sorry to hear...

Here's my hypothesis (and btw, I'm getting a banner ad about wiping arrest records off of your search history that has a really disturbing/distracting photo right now):
Few but you and maybe your gf care that you're a climber. And many (most?) people who've been forced to hear climbers extoll their own awesomeness for being a climber ad nauseum will give you an f' u in whatever way is available to them.
Or more cop-specifically...I was once with a prof. who tried to explain to a cop who pulled him over for making an illegal left that he was on his way to give a talk at Berkeley and blah blah blah...He was almost asking the guy to add infractions onto his ticket. If you choose the tack telling a cop about how important you are and how important the reason you were speeding was, there better be an obviously laboring pregnant woman or a gunshot victim next to you. Otherwise, get ready to listen to them explain their own toughness to you for a bit.
