29er's are faster on technical downhills, uphills, singletrack Etc., Etc., ask the pros they know

Aaron Gwin rides a 26 pretty fast on somewhat technical terrain.

technically speaking its a 29er, but a touring bike, not mountain. It just so happens its for sale if anyone is interested (Motobecane steel frame, XT derailleur and hubs...) Sea of Cortez / Bahia del Conception in background.

For the last year I have enjoyed the 2011 Specialized Epic 29. Best ride of my life, the suspension rocks, charges up hill, and floats downhill. I have even thought about getting back into xterra WC again but just love hittin the trails.

Will

Yeah Joe, climbing is still at the top of the list and we'll see how much of both I can do. The only upshot is I have basically 7 days a week to work out the balance. As climbing season hits it's npeak I'm sure I'll be riding less though.
on another note, Gorge du Tarn is back open and only a couple hours from our village. Get yer butt over here!

I have a 26" full suspension Turner that's a great bike, that I don't even ride anymore. The 29er hardtail carbon superfly is much more responsive and faster and climbs way better than the Turner even on lock-out.

29er is the bike for xc racing.

no credible rider gives a fukk about downhill. I ride a $100 Sears Huffy downhill and lag your $3,000 29'er by .12 seconds. We climb 3,000 feet and I dust your 29'er by 7 minutes

I'll be finally buying a new bike this year (after riding my current rig for a good 20 yrs.) and I haven't been able to bring myself to consider a 29. I can see the some of the additional power you might get climbing, though I tend to rely on my legs, not the bike to get me uphill. Also, I have a heck of a time seeing how those bigger wheels are going to be anything but a burden on technical descents. Nicer for rolling over some types of obstacles, but not for maneuvering.

Am I just wrong on that point?

Um no on the technical dh part....the larger wheel creates a larger centrifugal force which makes them more stable, but decreases the "agile" or quick turn response for technical dh.

Not trying to sh#t on 29ers they are great for just about everything but "technical dh."

BTW check out scott 2013 genius lt.......650B!!!!! That bike is going to be sick

Dana ^^, interesting to read your comments on the 29ers and XC. Thanks for your explanation. What "carbon superfly" do you have?

My 26" inch Specialized comp hard tail was stolen a month ago, so I found a Turner 5 Spot, after demoing 29 and 26 Specialized and Turners for a couple days. Was amazed at what I could roll over on the 29ers, but ended up with a 26. The new full suspension bike is a LOT more work on the uphill (of course, compared w/a hardtail), but the performance on the down with the Turner is so quick. The 29s were very fun to ride and they are way faster on moderate terrain.... getting them back up to speed in variable terrain with lots of up and down is not as easy.

(edit - i know i'm mixing 26 and 29ers, hardtail and DH....not very scientific comparison)

kunlun_shan, it's a 09 Gary Fisher superfly. 29ers can take time getting used too.

Only disadvantage I know is on tight (hairpin) turns.

They make riding fun again.

I've never flatted on my 29er..On my old 26 stump jumper , i'd get flats now and then...So there's a thumbs up for 29er's....

I'm rolling with a 29er single speed. Super fun and quiet.
