Cragman, do you climb with a gun? Where does a climber wear a gun? Have you ever shot a gun while climbing?

If you and Flanders come climbing fast beneath me and want to pass, will you use your gun to enforce your will?

If the campers next to you are making a ruckus and keeping you awake, do a few rounds through the offenders tent fly shut them up?

If some local punks get aggressive, do you inwardly think "try me motherf*#ker, I'm carrying a gun and won't hesitate to shoot you in your unchristian face!"

Authorities: Aurora theater shooting suspect's apartment "booby trapped"

AURORA —Police say that the apartment of the suspect in an early morning movie theater shooting appears to be booby trapped.

Police Chief Dan Oates said the explosive devices were "pretty sophisticated."

"We could be here for days," he said.

Karodrinker,

Yup. You nailed it. The gun is used for everything.

If my nuts itch, I blow them off with my .357.

Ron - not sure a bunch of weapons, in the hands of amateurs, in a dark theater is a good idea. When Rep Gifford got shot in Tucson there was a guy there with a concealed weapon drawn and ready to shoot. He almost shot the guy who picked up the handgun Loughner dropped. He also ran the risk of himself getting shot by the police.

Statistically the odds are that a gun is more likely to kill an acquaintance before it ever stops a crime.

Where'd you get that statistic? It doesn't sound logical to me.

If there is so much crime there Crag, why aren't you stopping it with your gun?! I mean what the hell is going on? With great power comes great responsibility. Pull out your piece and get to work!

Only once was my life ever threatened by other people, and if I had a gun with me I would probably be dead too. Luckily I was able to run away. My best defense is: I can run faster than most people. Defense #2 = law license. With these superior defenses I don't need a gun. I can't even imagine a situation where I would need to shoot someone.

I live in a small mountain town as well, and of late, we've had a significant rise in burglaries and meth-related crime. For the first time in my life, I'm in strong consideration of having a gun in the home (& good training to go along with it).

I have a very good friend who has 20+ years with the Medford Sheriff's Dept...my wife has a colleague with 20+ years with LAPD...there is a local resident we know who is retired LAPD...interestingly, every well-experienced LE person I've talked with strongly recommends against a gun in the home.

It would have taken an extremely well trained and disciplined shooter to do
any good in the dark maelstrom that theatre was. Most people who get concealed
permits probably would have made the situation worse. However, one good
shot would have fixed it.

So other than blasting a bear, how many "Life threatening " situations have you used your gun for?

I'm fine with conceal carry and responsible folks carrying firearms.

Part of growing up in Alaska with two parents who enjoyed shooting.

There are some serious issues with using it in self defense in this situation. Basically your best bet is to exit nearly instantly or get cover. You don't a have a team with you that can cover you so it is difficult to keep eyes on target.

It's dark confusing and happens very fast. About the only way a guy with a concealed weapon will have a good shot is if he took cover pulled his weapon and the guy walked around the corner into him ..A few other scenarios could work as well but all involve a bit of luck... If it happens, great, shoot the f*#ker.

But here is another issue what if several people do the same thing?

None wear Uniforms and it is not easy to determine who is a good guy and who is a bad guy ..As mentioned in the story about the congresswoman.

Concealed carry is a serious responsibility as is the handling of firearms at any time. Self defense takes a lot of training to be effective and even then luck plays a part.

Every time there's another horrific shooting, it's amazing how quickly and predictably the pro-gun contingent goes onto the offense.

It's sad how lost the actual tragedy is, and how events like this are quickly used to suit one's own interests.

Guns are the worst invention the world has ever seen. So many lives lost, so much pain caused.

Yet so glorified.

F*#k Guns.
