Photos are from top of first summit of the Chief.

on Dec 9, 2011 the Moon rise (by my calc) was close to 3:45pm local time, at an azimuth of 55.18ºan hour later it was at an azimuth of 65.83º and an altitude of 8.10º

on Dec 1, 2009 the Moon rose around 3:35pm at an azimuth of 47.25º and an hour later it was at 60.55º and an altitude of 7.09º

That's about right - the moon rose a little later this year than two years ago, plus it was eight days closer to the solstice, so the sun set about ten minutes earlier. Hence in the 2009 photo, Garibaldi is pink, but it's faded in the 2011 photo.

what's the peak in the background to the left?

Mount Garibaldi. About 15 km NNE of Squamish.

Edit: as Hamie notes, it's usually called Garibaldi, but in fact comprised of three sub-summits: Atwell, Garibaldi, and Dalton Dome. IIRC, Garibaldi is slightly the higher of the three.

Happy New Year to all.
Ed, there are actually two peaks back there on the left. The rounded one at the far left is Garibaldi, which is the higher of the two. The pointy one on the right, which looks higher, is Atwell.

Hmm...I only took one sunset photo in 2011, and it was taken with an iPhone while walking in Riverside Park in NYC.

ok, if Atwell Peak on the Google Earth is the same (there is no Garibaldi mentioned on GE!?) it is 9.73 miles away (15.65 km) and an elevation of 8711', where as the pictures are taken at roughly 2038', then Atwell Peak has an altitude of 7º, in the picture on 12/9/2011 has the moon about at the same altitude as the peak, that was at 4:40 pm and an azimuth of 65º the peak should be at 36.35º so the difference is 28.7º

On 12/1/2009 the bearing of the Moon is north of the previous picture, and the altitude is obviously lower. The bearing to Atwell Peak is something like 4/5, so 23º the Moon's azimuth would be 59.3º which occurred at 4:22pm on that day with a Moon altitude of 6º which seems very reasonable...

[edited with Anders' input below,
he could check his photo files for the times that the pictures were taken to see if my calculations are close...]

Atwell 5621'? According to the map it's 2655 m, or about 8,711' asl.

IIRC, the second summit of the Chief is 2,138' - there's a benchmark a few m below its summit. The first summit is 20 m or so lower.

Hopefully that doesn't skew your calculations.

Really like those icicles, muted colors, and mountain. Seems to be a drip in progress, too. I wonder what makes those knobby gnarled-finger icicles compared to the immense sleek spikes we used to get on the eaves of the old homestead.

The 2011 photo was taken at 16:38, the 2009 photo at 16:16. Camera time setting not changed between photos, probably originally set to NRC time signal, so within a few minutes of reality.

Moonrise in 2009 was somewhat earlier, although it helped that it rose in the gap between the second and third summits, instead of directly behind the third.
