What a dumb question! It's hard, remote, cold, super expensive and many like being the big fish in the little pond. Most Alpinists I know were good climbers. It was a natural progression to go afield. Also ice climbing and dry tooling take a whole different mindset. Is'nt this a fun debate?

John Gill was about two decades ahead of any other rock climbers and was commonly found free soloing hard routes in the Tetons and other mountains.

Royal, Chouinard and others were the best of their day and frequented the mountains.

In a few minutes we're going back up in the plane with Jello for aerial shots of hard climbs he established in the Wind Rivers; one of them paralleling a route I established on North Tower of Haystack Mtn.

+1 Werner. Elite climbers are from the back of beyond, to paraphrase Critical Bill, "Things to do in Denver when your Dead".

If there was good climbing in the mountains, then that's where the good climbers would be. But everybody knows the rock in the mountains is crumbly, and who the f*#k wants to trudge up some boring snow slope anyway?

Stupid question. Good climbers climb where the good climbing is. Everybody knows that is Yosemite Valley. Anywhere else is like who cares? Why do you think that when you read about climbing in "The Big Mountains" it's all guys from Slovenia or f*#king Poland or something? If you live in Europe or some other place, then there isn't anything good to climb (unless you go to America) so if you want to be able to talk about something other than your local chosspile, then what can you do? Go to some bigger pile like Ole Biahole or something.

Gud climbers are always well prepared.........

And starting the pre-dawn approach, while driving with one knee on snow packed icy roads filling up on the healthiest of foods for a 16 hour day into the unknown......
