If by "good" you mean climbing hard numbers the two are somewhat mutually exclusive. To pull hard numbers, you need to train power and strength, not endurance and altitude. Slow twitch vs fast twitch muscle, or something like that, right? There are exceptions, like the Huber Bros, but generally speaking if someone is drawn to the mountains they will train for that. If someone is drawn to hard movement, they will train for that. That's my oversimplification.

I once asked a similar question.

Why don't guys like Tommy C. put up new routes on Middle Cathedral?

I was told that Tommy said he only had time for "good" rock.......

I mean, Christ, if I could climb 5.12 confidently, I wouldn't dick around with projecting a 5.13a at some shitttty crag -- I'd be in Patagonia or the Bugaboos or the (Canadian) Rockies climbing something soulful at a lower grade

That is a very general question.
Obviously, there are fewer climbers venturing into the big mountain ranges, than out on the local crags.

If you mean climbers who climb up to 5.13 trad and then take that skill to the big mountain ranges in the world--there are even less. That is to be expected, but there out there in increasing numbers; male and female.

I just came back from the Ambush Peak area of the Wind Rivers--a favorite place and close to my heart. I was climbing with an old friend Jim Donini.

One week before our arrival, Madeline Sorkin pushed a new 5.12 line up the face of Ambush Peak.
She is one of the many younger generation out there doing it, and I have other friends here in New England who do it every year.

If you call pebble wrestlers good climbers then you may have a hard time finding many in the mountains. Other than the few select media hound pebble wrestlers there are scores of great climbers in the mountains...

Plenty of good climbers climb in the mountains, I think that your definition of "good" climbers is off. There are plenty of no-name mutants out there in the backcountry crushing rocks and establishing FA's. The fact you've never heard of them before is beside the point.
