Ghost: CNN has summed it up interestingly in their headline: "Bruins win Cup; riots rock loser city"

Which pretty much nails it. Yes, people behave stupidly around the world, but only losers behave as some did last night.

The front page headline in the local paper (the Vancouver Sun) today: "Noble in defeat". Cognitive dissonance at its best - a local paper should do better. The rioting started right after the game, long before their deadline. But not a peep on the front page. The first mention is two articles on page 6 - "Hooligans' antics embarrass city" and "Riots shut down bus service in downtown core". But then, they've been hyping the whole thing for months. Plus in our last civic elections (2008), some campaigned on the slogan "Nofuncouver" - they thought the city needed to relax its laws to do with alcohol sales and licensing, open hours, etc. Including I believe our current mayor, Gregor Robertson, who now may be eating his words.

Pate, some of the online comments I've read about the photo you posted (Asian guy with a hockey stick) say was he was yelling at rioters and looters to stop. Its easy to misinterpret the context of a photo. Who knows...

Apparently, there were a number of people who tried to protect store fronts and didn't back down. I'm glad to hear this!

The youth here in vancouver are just plain blood thirsty and have no attachment to the consequences of their actions. they grew up playing violent video games and its conditioned them to seek the real thing for pure entertainment purposes …

My own experience with these types 4 years ago was horrific and destroyed my life in every way. I truly hope there were no casualties last night that suffered anything close to what happened to me.

Nothing kicks my PTSD into high gear like seeing a group of kids in Vancouver at night.

Ethnicity was well represented last night but beware when in Vancouver of especially the Chinese and all Asians and the East Indians are by far the most violent. Our loose immigration policy has ruined this country, allowing wealthy foreign criminals and their kids to freely enter Canada just because they have money.

1994 loss to NY Rangers spawned the same riots in the same streets.

Please don't disturb Anders, he's coming out of retirement with an abundant case load awaiting him! Vancouver should be in the playoffs more often, the attorneys, umm, solicitors need the work.

Can we go back to the couple on the street now?

You Canadians have it all wrong.

Only the WINNING city is supposed to riot.

That way, even after you've burned down the liquor stores and check cashing joints, you're still World Champions.

Just basic, riot etiquite.

Down here, Asians are a moderating influence, during the riots.

Koreans, armed with ARs and deer rifles, manning the rooftops kept most of the buildings in some parts of L.A. from being torched during the Great Rodney King Riot.

Can't help wonder what this event will do to the Vancouver Canucks as a sports franchise.
How will people feel about being identified as Canuck fans?
Will people be as interested in season tickets?
Imagine the stigma the Canucks will carry into their future.
How many Vancouver Canucks are looking for the quickest possible exit from the team to another franchise? I'd venture some are willing to take a cut on their contracts to get out as fast as possible.
I think the damage to the psyche of the Canucks, their fans and the people of Vancouver will be profoundly deep and enduring. What a frikkin bummer!

this had nothing to do with the Canucks Chief and everything to do with disaffected youth of all ethnicities - The ones the economists are calling - "Generation Screwed"

Jim "There are no old bold climbers" Brennan,

The demographics of the city are a fact. My comment on the asian population was factual, not racist. I don't see you getting up in arms about defending the honour of the red-necks. In addition, my comments were a lot less controversial than some of the comments that followed.

apparently, there are plenty of old, bold bloggers ; )

this had nothing to do with the Canucks Chief
bmacd, I'm guessing that today, most of the Vancouver Canucks are feeling like it had everything to do with them and more importantly, many of them probably want nothing further to do with the city of Vancouver and their supposed fans.

throw in a few hundred thousand asians, shake well and voila...bliss in the rain!
My comment on the asian population was factual, not racist.
pakdong, bs, your original post was erroneous and smacked of racism. The news footage clearly shows a pretty mixed ethnic bag, the majority of them red neck, white trash from the burbs.

bk,

We probably need to be careful with the term redneck and what the term might mean to different people. At best, red necks are working class folks with clear, simple values who live uncomplicated lives free of affectation.
At worst, red necks are people who choose and defend ignorance and bigotry as a way of life.
How about substituting red neck with "ignorant, bigoted, violence prone hominids"?

Calling some one "Asian" is about as racist as calling someone "North American", or "Antarictican"...as in,

"I wish those damned Antarcticans wouldn't move in here with their fancy dinner wear and eat all my fish".

Or, "I wish Bruce Kay, that gosh darned North American wouldn't snag all the plum lines, boy that just makes me wanna riot!"
