Farm? I believe it's a Ranch. As in Chicken Ranch. Big difference when you can herd 'em, know what I mean? (northwest of Hammil, again, a difference...)

Many names come to mind. Even starting from the 70's it can vary by a subset of the years, a focus on a particular disipline, or a particular area.

There were some inside jokes regarding the ranch in my last post, it wasn't meant to be serious. But I still can't wait to see Harrington...

ok, carry on.

You beat me to it Russ. My list applies only to the most influential East Siders of the modern era, because I don't want to insult anyone by calling them grandfather's (especially Lisa). Also, my list takes into account the factors of drawing attention to the area, particular areas and/or particular climbs. No particular order:

Mick Ryan
Marty Lewis
Kevin Calder
Peter Croft
Bob Harrington
Galen Rowell
Claude Fiddler
The Stroker
Chris Sharma
Wills Young
Lisa Rands

Good choices. I would not overlook Glen Dawson, though.

Who bolted Clark's?

Otherwise, the modern era list includes those above, Croft, Marty and Kevin, Wills and Lisa, folks like that.

Who started bolting the Gorge? Or perhaps the gorge is no longer modern.

Oh Jeezus. This is worse than hearing your favorite band on the classic rock station.

Dang, how could I have spaced Dave Nettle? He's a modern FA Sierra god. Maybe not the grandfather, but he's keeping the tradition going opening up brilliant new lines.

And he's one hell of an awesome person too.

I was just thinking of Dave Nettle, as I plan (this summer?) to do Edge of Time

also going to throw in Chouinard who as far as I can tell was the first guy to really dabble in alpine ice climbing in the Sierra. also Pietsantra??

Jason, you should swing by and check out my Sierra Eastside guide by Alan Bartlett and Errett Allen. Some good stuff in there...

Great list Rankin and good point. Alas it is too late to change the title of the thread. But I am getting the answers I expected and more!

+1 another vote for Nettle. Does he still work at Alpenglow? Used to see him in there all the time 12+ years ago when I lived in Homewood. I doubt he'd remember me.

Past him, I second a lot of the already mentioned names:

Marty Lewis for OWG
Bachar for his bouldering areas and some contributions at OWG
Peter Croft
Dale Bard for pushing standards at Buttermilks

Whoever brought tablelands bouldering to the limelight as Hueco was becoming a bummer to go to.

I still miss Bardini, but neither he nor Vern strike me as grandfather material -- they're more like fathers, along with Claude Fiddler, Bob Harrington, Dennis Oakeschott, and, of course, Dale (because they're all younger than me).

A lot of those tablelands climbers aren't big talkers strangely enough, that's why someone else wrote the articles that got the word out on the Happies and such.
