I think a useful question you might ask yourself is why do I really give so many $hits about what other people are climbing?

Maybe you yourselves have sprayed the old "I love the challenge of overcoming difficulty" schpeil.

People say this to justify why we even bother with the pointless pursuit of climbing. I've said it. And sh#t I'll probably continue to try and convince myself that challenge gives climbing more meaning. But honestly I think its cyclical. You start out having no idea what the point is of climbing and then you climb for awhile and believe you have greater understanding of it. Then after you've been climbing long enough you start to realize that it really doesn't mean sh#t. Its just a form of masturbation that means nothing at all. Our lives have become so easy that we need to seek challenges. Its no longer about surviving.

Rap bolting, gym climbing, sticky rubber, cams, harnesses ,kermantle ropes, climbing. all of it has diluted life. Thats the water we all swim in. Don't think sports climber and gym climbers are any more special than trad climbers, aid climbers, expedition climber, most of humanities existence is diluted

The day we all fight to survice is the day we are no longer swimming in the weak sauce.

At one time, the rule was "the leader must not fall".

Things are different now ( except when I'M leading ).

Hi Tami

Before we get on topic, i am blown away to receive a response from you, your cartoons kill me (i circulated a copy of your "hav ya bin in the climbin' gym too long" to certain friends from the nottingham climbers club (50 years in 2011 - big party!)) you are a genius and thats leaving aside the serious climbing u did. Cool baby!

On topic, you're right to mention the slate and all the stories/risks of serious falls - i guess thats the way they bolted (as Redhead said "the tormented ejaculation), but its funny that Andy Pollitt's knocking on heaven's door and Jonny Dawes slab and crack (both Curbar, 1988 and 1986 respectively)are still big ticks even now (see UK Climbing re recent repeats by Ryan Pasquill.

Good climbing!

Maybe 1st ascents of dangerous climbs make more sense to risk life and limb doing, while subsequent ascents have a diminishing appeal to take as much risk.

Spiky's mere mention of the Red Wall almost caused a massive relaxation of
my sphincter but that is a chronic condition with me and probably an indication
of terminal wussiness.

By the by, were we not supposed to be climbing there in late November 'in the damp'?

I'm thinking of what Donini said.

"The older you get, the better you were."

Says a lot on so many levels.

Climbing has definitely become more mainstream, and I think with the larger mainstream audience we've picked up many of the general attitudes of society.

"Bold" has been slowly morphing to mean "stupid"

and that is a very sad thing. Personally, I think every climber needs a staple sample of "R" in the regimen. It keeps you fresh, on your toes and sharp in the mind.

Fortunately I think there's still a difference between "klimbers" and "Climbers"

klimbers" are looking for the new age physical and gymnastic challenges associated with sport climbing. klimbers can be found spraying on 8a and in the bar with a buzzed lightbeer.

Climbers (with a capitol "C") are out to test sheer mettle against nature, and no day is complete without completing at least a minor pant-$#!tter (i.e. a bold-ass runout). Historically can be found downing a bottle of wine on the top of each pitch on el cap, or throwing back whiskey by the fire to calm the nerves after an extreme pant-$#!tter.

Hmmm, I would disagree...
