I am like Flouride in that I only usually look at the topics on the first page. I, too, have missed some interesting climbing topics because they get buried by political posts.
It really would not be that hard to have two separate tabs for 'forums', one being climbing and the other being everything else. That seems like a pretty fair solution to me.

4 out of 30 topics are politics right now. Is that so bad?
I don't want to have to check two tabs to see what people are talking about. I want to see climbing topics and other intesting topics (Olympics, Half Dome permits) in one place. And what is the Half Dome permit thread? Climbing specific, no. So you wouldn't have seen it on an off-topic tab anyway.

Flouride, I feel your pain. I'm sick of the ranting by the lunatics. Maybe if we quit reading their posts they'll go back under the rock they climbed out from underneath...for most of them, that's the closest they'll get to a rock!

Though a regular participant of the politi-tard threads, I'm with you, Fluoride. I do believe this is a 'Climber's Forum', and don't support the idea of a moderator or a separate tab, and think that self-management is a better tack.
Unfortunately, it seems 'self-management' seems to be too high of an ideal for too many people. Making reasonable requests for individuals to be a bit more considerate and respectful of other users is usually met with hostility or accusations of censorship. It's really pathetic, selfish, and stooopid.
I've kinda given up trying, except every once in a while when I get my skivvies in a twist. Still, it's a great bunch to be around, and I've seen worse dynamics in other Forums. Sigh.

Thank you Bruce for being a voice of logic. It's not that hard to separate the two. If we can have a separate forum for beta, TR's etc, then why can't we have one for non-climbing related topics. As I said earlier, everybody wins that way. Those who want to debate stuff can do so, and those who just want to discuss climbing have a place where it won't be relegated to the third page because of constant back and forth on the hot topic political stuff that bumps actual climbing threads into oblivion.
And for making such a logical suggestion I was called a witch. Good grief. Wonder why not many women post here anymore?
ps Fet - when I logged on today that wasn't the case.

Look, all I'm saying is I'd like to log in and see a page with climbing treads on it.
Try Rockclimbing.com.
Heavily moderated, lacks good content and tedious as hell.
Or use your mouse and click only on threads (or pages) you think look interesting.

Flouride,
I think it is a lumper/splitter type of issue. Many is the time I've seen a thread that would be called non-climbing to start, morph into a climbing thread. That is the mosh. Conditions change, just like in climbing.

Randy that's the point. I'm having to go 3 pages deep to find interesting climbing threads cause they get bumped off the front page so fast due to the OT debate threads. I don't have a lot of time to come here so I miss them when they originally go up. And get buried.

No, you win that way.
Right now you have to check a couple pages to see the days climbing topics. What you want would mean people interested in other topics have to check a couple pages.
I see the desire, but other forums aleardy are run that way. We like our free for all here.

if'n you had a sepertion,
you'd need a moderator
to examine every original
posters content also, otherwise
one could simply cloak thier
OT thread w/climby werds.
so, do you want seperation and
a moderator?

I also have been here for eight years, and yes, I think there are more non-climbing threads now than when the site first started.
I don't look at alot of the non-climbing threads, and to get my climbing fix,
I read the trip reports. I do agree with Fluoride though, would like to see more climbing topics.

Beth,
There are ways this could be done. Make people classify their threads then allow people to opt out of seeing posts not classified as climbing. Of course there would have to be a few people to delete/reclassify the non climbing stuff put on the climbing area. Although I really like this idea I really hate the idea of the taco stand becoming a RC.com copy. Regardless every 4-6 months one of us makes this suggestion and it never happens.

Just recently, Chris created the "Trip Report" tab for posting trip reports rather than posting them in the 'Forum'. I didn't see a ton of complaints about having to click an extra tab to view trip reports and there doesn't seem to be the need for a moderator to keep everything straight between the two tabs.

Something else the 'Tards don't notice, while they're "debating" their tedious rants, is that none of them ever convinces the other to their point of view.
So it's just an exercise in futility, "Tardibation", if you will.
I can't THAT as being very fun, or enlightening, at all.
I don't mind chaos, but the frickin' ranting begs for just a bit of "containment".
Silly Polititards.

I'll be nuking this thread shortly. You've had your say and it's that this is where a climbing forum wants to be. Just know a lot of climbers who used to post here don't anymore cause of what it's become.
That makes me sad.
And bro-John, I actually DO go climbing every weekend so stop it. Just stop it. I post about climbing. See my Yerian thread for example.
