Visit a walmart.
You probably thought I was exaggerating...

What to notice: Not $300!
And they'll protect against rain, bear, whatever
just as well nine times out of ten.

P.S. Stzzo- Of course all the threads concern walmart,
like I said, I just joined this forum today. What
is a troll? twice mentioned now.

Welcome to Gardnerville, Walmart, I'll shop you.
I'm looking for a camara, the Canon SD1200 IS, I think.
Unbeatable at $149.

you are correct about population. The problem with population is that we all want everything. In order to have everything then we need to pay less to achieve this goal, and the problem is that when stuff is so cheap then someone else had to pay. Not necesarrily with money, but in the manner which the producers are having to live, and the resources that are raped and polluted to achieve low cost.

again how much camping have you done in your $30 tent?

Is it better to buy one $300 tent and have it for the rest of your life, or consume many $30 tents in the course of your life?

the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten!

take care

How could Walmart be a good thing, especially in the long run. Look at the great value products that sit on their shelves.

Take something simple like cheese in a can. Walmart pays Nabisco to basically print the great value label on the can and then sell it right next to the Nabisco cheese. So now we have two products with the same thing on the inside and different prices. Then wait till Christmas time or Thanksgiving and Walmart boosts the price on their cheap cheese and calls it good.

Another one of their tactics is to put in a store and start out with products that have lower prices. As soon as local businesses go out they raise their prices up since they are now the only ones who carry that specific item in town. For instance locally we had a fabric store with a huge variety of fabrics. Then Walmart came in and lowered the prices on their fabric. The local fabric store then went out of business. As soon as they were gone Walmart jacked their prices up on fabric and cut back the variety of fabric since they did not have to compete anymore.

Another thing that makes me mad is now that the Walmart is established in my town they have decided to put one in the next closest town that is about twice as big population wise. The store is bigger and better. So the first thing they do is drop the prices in that store well below the one in my town. After all of the shoppers realize this and start shopping in the other town they boost the prices and change the hours of the store that is in my town. The new hours have my store closing at 12 and the one in the other town 24hrs. Talk about pissed off.

Not only have they screwed us on their hours now but they screw us on the lines. They have now reduced the number of employees working the registers so you always have to wait in line even longer.

Thats not all, they force suppliers to sell to them at a lower price or they will not accept their products into the store. Once they get the contract signed the suppliers and manufactures are forced to lower the quality of their products just to keep their stuff on the shelves of Walmart.

Also their "greeters" are not greeters at all. The older store in my town has the "greeter" at the entrance saying hi. Take the new store in the other town and they now have a "goodbyer". These employees are in no way shape or form for "greeting" they are theft management specialists meant only for catching thief's that are not spotted by their super duper camera system.

Lastly they brainwash their theft management employees into asking for "their" merchandise back when they call out a thief at the front of the store, likes it's theirs products not Walmarts. Basically theft drives up prices correct? Well that doesn't matter because every single thief that is caught has to pay the absolute max of restitution straight to the store, not through a court. So for instance every thief that steals has to pay 175$ no matter what the item costs.

Take it for what its worth I do not care but Walmart is the devil.

As long as we're talking about corporate mega-monsters that have had a large impact on the deterioration of markets and individuals....

Avoid REI, the outdoor industry equivalent of WalMart. Buy from local retailers whenever possible. Buy American or Canadian.

Dave,

Being that you're from Carson City, I researched you. You own the Sporting Rage. I LOVE your shop! Please don't get me wrong, higher quality gear has its place, too. Earlier, I was just commenting on Walmart, its pros and cons (with emphasis on the pros).

But I am still looking forward to its arrival in Gardnerville. After all the controversy. Don't know if, being a local, you know about that-- but I'm glad it's over.

Stzzo- I'm not sure I get your latest post. But from Wikipedia:

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

This thread is no more off-topic it seems to me than others in the list. So everyone who posts off-topic at this site is a troll? Healyje is a troll? Norton is a troll?

Nate-

you're grinding an ax.

I'll just say the Walmart we have in our neighborhood
doesn't fit your description at all. Maybe they
vary place to place, state to state.

Let's see, many walmart employees are on
state medicaid and other assistance since the corporation
doesn't give good benefits or pay its employees living wages.
Oh, and how many lawsuits have been won against them
for cheating their employees out of wages earned.
Gosh, and what about the cases where they lock the
employees in the stores so they cannot leave even
if family emergencies arise.

Doesn't that sound like a great place to work?

I buy in bulk and save even more money.

Sams Club

Save about a grand a year and no fat people.

The only thing I get at Wallmart is ammo and $15.00 climbing pants, just as functional as Pattagucci.

Hi TGT, I believe Sam's Club and Walmart are owned by the same people. I could be wrong.

Yes, Sam's Club is a subsidiary of WalMart- they are the WalMart competitive answer to Costco.

Chaz, how about a little field research: go take a job at WalMart in Hemet for 6 months (if you last that long- you're too smart for such abuse), then take a job working for a small (mom & pop) retailer. Report back with your findings.

Yep, Sam's as in Sam Walton

The trick is to buy a case of Ziploc bags or a vacuum bagger on you first visit. Then when you get the load home chop the meat up into meal size packages and freeze.

You can't even find steaks as good as theirs outside of a specialty butcher

That's because most of your other options went out of business. The remainder are struggling, too.
