I can tell you one thing. After you have lived in Maui a few years, its really hard to move back home and have fun going ice climbing and surfing in 40 degree water.

Working on "Time Machine" we shot for a few weeks in upstate NY. They hired locals in Albany one night for background and had them standing around all night in turn of the century costumes in a local park on a frozen pond. Tweeds and cottons.
It got to be about -30F in the early mornning hours and half the extras walked off the set around 3am.
I was in full modern alpine gear and I was cold.
I was running around with propane heaters to the BG though I was given direct orders to heat the talent only.

The producers didn't pay the BG rate of $65 promised to the folks that left.

gotta love hollywood.

CA= full sun & no wind cold at 55 degrees
UT= full sun & no wind cold at 25 degrees

Humidity has a lot to do with it as does getting used to it as mentioned above.

Don't think I'm brave enough to try the barefoot deal though.

Just got a report from R. Nugent who was planning an ice-climbing trip this weekend past: for him anyway, -30 centigrade is too cold.

The low temperature in Vancouver on December 20th, 2008 was -15.2 C, just under the record -17.8 C. The high temperature on July 30th, 2009 was +34.4 C, a record. The difference being 49.6 degrees, almost 50 degrees.

"Proof" of global warming and global cooling, all in one post. What more could one want?

Warbleredit: 50 degrees = 90 degrees F in imperialistic measure.

-15.2 C = +4.5 F. +34.4 C = +94 F.

I've been working outside in Wyoming for the last 6 winters. Good mountaineering training.

-20F = too cold for climbing and downhill (chair) skiing. Best to ski uphill when it gets to be -20.

for free climbing; made a mid winter trip to da lake a couple of years ago, -15f and despite the direct sunshine hands stopped working good enough and i couldn't get up a 5.6. 2/3 of the way up it though, and i was a bit proud of that in itself.

ice climbing at -30f (green bay wisco) last year was a very interesting and fun experience. the ice was SO brittle and sounded like smashing glass. lots of fun, we got up to that for hours and did multiple routes. sun down oooooodles of it.

IN answer to the OP ........how cold is too cold?

Easy - whatever freezes yer pink bits when yer outside & naked.

But, as you imply, that depends on what inside temperature you just left.

I moved to southern California from CT. And I spent 4 years living in Rochester, NY so I'm no stranger to the cold. I actually hiked through a foot of freshly fallen snow to get in some mid-winter climbing at Ragged Mountain a couple years ago; my first ever climbing trip was to the Red River Gorge, where it snowed 3 out of the 6 days I was there. Didn't stop us from climbing though. As for CA, soon as the temps drop below 60F here, I have trouble finding motivated partners.

14 degrees F this morning. Kind of hot need to climb in the shade where it's cooler.
