the pic im guessing was around 86. That introduction to Mt Woodson was written by me for Craig Fry's socal bouldering guide, but the add-on at the end was Craig's, and should have read "previous info was by MICHAEL PAUL", not Ron Amick.

This is the ending from a short story, The Rocks Won't Fetch, by Bill Jackson:
"Back in San Diego after many years starting and pastoring churches in the Midwest, motives cleaned of spiritual lichen over a twenty-year hiatus from climbing, I wrapped my fingers around the fine-grained granite of Mt. Woodson and closed my eyes. Sensations shot through my nerve endings and memories flooded my brain of Eldorado's Bastille, New Hampshire's fall colors on Mt. Washington, bloody jams at Joshua Tree it seemed like it had been yesterday.
It was OK now. I was secure in myself so I no longer demanded the rocks to fetch for me. My anger had long ago disappeared into a sea of forgiveness and challenging life to a duel now seemed a foolish enterprise. I had put first things first and was at last able to reengage with a new generation under wing. They are the strong warriors now and I, perhaps, the keeper of wisdom.
I felt the muscles in my biceps flex as my fingers locked off. Feet in opposition, I powered my way up the flake. Always eager to work two systems at once, my right hand ventured off to another crack to the right and I stepped out of the wedge to stem the face. My new 5.10 Spires found edges my EBs would have missed and I could hear my heart pumping "out loud" again. When I pulled myself over the edge, my eyes soaked in the Ramona Valley and I felt like I'd just had coffee with an old friend."

SHIRT ANNOUNCEMENT...
EDIT: ARTWORK CHANGE... New artwork will be uploaded this AM. Painting will be the Uncertainty Principle Boulder.
Okay, after 24+ hours of hard disk problems I am 90% operational again in the art department (still missing a cople hundred fonts...?)
Anyway, the shirt for the 2010 Mt. Woodson Shindig will look like this mock-up. It features a beautiful full-color painting by Mt. Woodson artist, Larry Groff who has graciously let us use the print for a very modest honorarium. I felt it best to let the artwork speak for itself rather than clog it up with lots of climbing stuff. This shirt will be a collector's item!
The shirt will be available in men's and women's sizes. I will have ordering, pricing, color choices, etc. available on Tuesday. I will post the links here and on a separate thread. Spread the word!
VERY IMPORTANT...
If you order your shirt by THIS FRIDAY AFTERNOON you will have it availble for pickup at hte event. IF YOU WAIT until after that time it will be mailed to you later this month. That means you will have Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and part of Friday to get your order placed. This will allow me (barely) enough time to print and get them to the event for March 19 handout.
ANOTHER EDIT: Artwork posted below on my post.

We used to call this "Bozo NoNo" on the "Uncertainty Principle" boulder, 5.10c or 5.7,A0...Hey Ron, I never wrote that...I certainly wouldn't have listed myself, especially not first, as a major contributor...Just followed in JB's footsteps is all...Peace kids and have a great time!! I'd love to see you all, maybe next time. That shirt looks awesome IHP!! I loved that piece, and it was that one that had me comment on this exceptional artist's use of shadows and light!!
edit: That's a cool bit of that short story Gary!!:)

Hey bvb, watusi, dimes and co (don't know a lot of the other aliases). Really wish I could make the shindig thing and revisit the good old days. But moved to Scotland in 1989, and unfortunately won't be able to make it across the water this year. Started climbing at Woodson back in 1974 when I was a student at UCSD, and it was always one of my favorite places, especially for soloing. There are great places here for soloing too, especially the fantastic sandstone outcrops in Northumberland, on the Scottish/English border. They've become my Woodson substitute.
And it is indeed me (Paul Schweizer) in those photos of soloing Jaws and Driving South back in the early 80's that appeared near the start of the thread. Eppi snapped them on my old Olympus compact (a 'real dog' he called it), so I've got the original slides which have since been scanned. But Mike Paul definitely had that much hair back then too.
Anyway, hope the shindig's a blast, and enjoy crack heaven. Maybe get back there one of these days...

Woodson's reputation as a crack climbing Mecca was now written in stone-a misleading perception which exists to this day.
"a misleading perception"? Really?
Not.

Yeah, Wow is right on Schweizer! And to hear that the photo's are of HIM and not YOU Mike! Guess he fooled most all of us!
Good call on Bozo No-No. I'm sure glad to hear your confirmation on the rating to the start to that thing Mike. Ever since I figured out that puzzle at the bottom I too rated it 10b/c and the upper face 5.7. Over the years, I've seen/heard that most people can't figure out the start so they just clip the first bolt and yard up on the face, tsk tsk!

Mr. Schweizer,
Scotland holds a "wee bit" in my heart as well for I'm a "Mac"kay (original spelling until "some dam_ American changed it" to McCay, as I was told). Curious, what moved you to Scotland? My late Grandfather, "Scotty" Edward Thomson, (RAF); was from Glasgow and I still remember him well. He use to wear the Glasgow Coat of Arms on his dinner jacket and he would recite the poem in his strong Scottish brogue:
"There's the tree that never grew,
There's the bird that never flew,
There's the fish that never swam,
There's the bell that never rang."
I still say I'm going to vacation there, first flying to Ireland and then taking the boat over to Scotland. Maybe one day I will.
