Coming from bass lake, I was considering beats ore to central camp, then across Browns meadow from gags
Those roads fairly tame? The
Gahhh,hold on
Beats
ore road. Trying to type on my kids iPad...
Keeps changing the name to beats ore.".Beasore.....
Be up there Friday morningish.
Edit, I have good map of the central camp to Browns meadow area. It'll be an adventure!, or a hell ride. I think I,be been through there with kev, just not piloting.
I'm up for some shooting too, may stop on they way up there. Find a good spot.

Campfires were still being allowed above 4000 feet as recently as last weekend when I was up - but check with the FS in light of this recent heatwave.
As for shooting - 500' feet off road is usually fine - just no tracer rounds and don't make a spark or the 26 million dead pines will explode!

if yer dumb enough to be shooting up in that beautiful but very dry forest make damn sure your using non-ferric ammo. Check it with a magnet.
edit: I'm bringing a world class pellet rifle. Super fun, minimal noise, won't spark a fire.

Glad to hear the fire is under control, Kris, and that you can make it. I was wondering. Super stoked to see everyone again, and looking forward to seeing rincon & Melinda on the way up! Kevin and Peg Wright are coming too, SLO ex-Stoneyers represent, yo. :) Leaving tonight, woot!!!
Thanks for the pix, Mike A, those swimming holes look prime!

Also posted the sign on the way out.
7602 isn't marked, but after Rock Creek campground you'll see a brown sign with mileage values on it. You'll be heading towards Browns Meadow 9miles.
It's the first left after the Rock Creek Campground. Enjoy the drive of dead trees.

It looks like I'm not going to be able to make it. I knew I had to be in Fresno for a wedding Saturday afternoon, but was hoping to come up tonight or tomorrow morning and stay until noonish on Saturday.
Unfortunately, a friend's death and memorial service have now taken up Friday. I'll try to swing by to say hello if I can, but I won't have enough time to climb.
This pains me greatly, as there will be many that I had been hoping to meet, and many I was looking forward to seeing again.

Has anyone here explored the stretch of river below Mammoth Pools Reservoir?
Also, yesterday I saw Kenny Rose at the El Cap Bridge. He just finished climbing Tangering Trip and he was in great spirits. He's going to miss this year to go Surfing with his son.

Hey Nutagain,
Let's go exploring tomorrow. I've been wanting to check out the river below Mammoth Pools Reservoir. I think that the trail to the river is upgraded. Have a look from mile high overlook.

I'm gearing up now.

Pack out yer poop is a good idea with big groups and rock surfaces.
Don't burn TP, pack it out or bury deep. Getting dry already.

The terrain below the Mammoth Pool Dam is some rough azz country to try to maneuver in and around. Did a down-dam foray a few years back with a Fly Fishing Maniac friend of mine and after covering maybe a fat mile in a hour said screw it.
Did have another bud go down early last year and said thee was a lot of debris washed in from the Aspen Fire that burned the eastern side. Later in the year, the French Fire burned down from the western side - so may be even more debris than before.

Why is Mammoth Pools closed to fishing, swimming (sign from FF post)?
Just curious. EDIT: Looks like the closure ended last weekend.
Justin, do you guys think those Nat Geo Trails Illustrated Maps would make a good raffle gift, as one of the consolation prizes?
They're better than the Forest Service maps IMO. It has just about all the trails around Chiquito/Shuteye outlined and named with FS road designations.
I'm going to score a couple extra from marina down here. The best part of these babies is that they cover the whole SNF. That includes our good friends, Shaver, Courtright, Huntington, And Wishon Lakes areas.

Yeah blue, those maps are awesome. I use it more than the forest service ones. Mammoth closes for deer migration, they swim across it.

For Bluerings question: Why is Mammoth Pools closed to fishing, swimming (sign from FF post)?
The closure is to protect migrating deer. Mammoth Pool blocks an ancient deer migration route that they still follow. The fawns have to swim across the lake to follow their mothers. They barely make it if they are not disturbed. Boat traffic especially, scares them off course and they drown.
The forest service closes all public access to the reservoir, till the migration is over.
edit: I should have read the next post. What This Just In said.
