No, you're right. It's better to just bury your head in the sand and pretend crime does not exist or let someone else worry about it.
All those people who take martial arts or carry pepper spray or take a self defense class....they are all nuts too, right?
Nothing bad ever happens to me. It's always someone else.

It's not a matter of more or less guns...it's a matter of who has the guns.
Criminals AND law abiding citizens...or just the criminals.

Typical NRA dogma. Anyone with a credit card can buy a frickin gun. Or 20. The NRA sees to that.

healyje, Very bizarre. Despite the frequency of shootings, I would wager that the vast majority of the people in this country ever witness a shooting, less frequently are victim of a random shooting. Twice inside a month is strange.
Kind of lends to the theory of "when your number is up", and that is not meant to disrespect the victim. Hard to figure the odds on that happening to a person.

Typical liberal response and completely wrong.
Need to pass the FBI background check too, plus a bunch of other hoops to jump through if you are in a state like Kalifornia.
And even in states like Nevada, you have to take a class (most of it on gun laws and who you can and can't shoot) and demonstrate actual shooting skills and proficiency to get a concealed carry permit.

gee
and all this time I thought ANYONE could buy a gun in an hour by simply looking in the
local newspaper and calling the phone number
guess I was wrong, now I find out you have to have a LICENSE and pass a background check to buy a gun

Kind of OT, but on the Arms Industry:
It is estimated that yearly, over 1.5 trillion dollars are spent on military expenditures worldwide (2.7% of World GDP).(1)
It's be hard to imagine that the US doesn't own the lion's share of that.

Never said you needed a license...
And yes Federal Law exempts "in state" private party transfers,
but most states have restrictions on handgun transfers...
That being said, no amount of laws and restrictions are going to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. They don't follow the law.
Using a K in California is shorthand for: I am a fringe lunatic.
Hilarious.
I grew up there, lived there for 35 years and have seen it go from being a great place to live,
to The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia.
The K is because it is nothing like the California I used to know.

It's not a matter of more or less guns...it's a matter of who has the guns.
Criminals AND law abiding citizens...or just the criminals.
Iv'e got more than a few problems with this statement.
First: Do not assume just because I disagree with your statement that I want to take your guns away.
Second: It does not logically follow that armed citizens would have prevented this. Honestly at the point every law abiding citizen has a concealed carry I'm done seeing movies in theaters. Some nut case pulls something like this with everyone in the theater packing and I guarantee the body count will be a lot higher. You may be the best shot on the planet. but some of those people carrying guns are not going to use them correctly.
Third: Despite how horrific this is, it is still a rare occurrence. Lots of people get shot. Can you tell me what the percentage of people shot by a disturbed individual on a rampage are as opposed to all other gun fatalities? (I want standard deviations too because I'm not into BS statistics.)
Fourth: As some have stated maybe there should be a bit more focus on mental health issues. I think we can all agree that people who plot massacres like this are not mentally "balanced". These are not the kind of people that would decide not to do this because someone might be armed in the crowd. In fact it sounds in this case like the perpetrator took a lot of precautions to thwart counter attack.
We should also take into account that we all sit around and talk about how people didn't see or should have seen the "warning signs" with individuals like this. First off, it's all in hindsight. Secondly maybe if we made it less of a stigma for people having mental problems to come forward for help they might actually receive it.
Hearing all the same pro / anti gun tropes frankly makes me a bit ill. Condolences to the victims and families. This was truly horrible. Those who wish to instantly make it a political debate make me even more sick.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of the population is paranoid enough to actually carry a concealed weapon. I'm guessing it's 5, maybe 10%. This guy was raining sh#t on a crowd and that percentage thinks if only someone would have had their piece, this wouldn't have happened. What BULL$HIT.
There are too many guns and they are too easy to get for criminals and nutcases alike. Reduce the number, end of story.

It does not logically follow that armed citizens would have prevented this. Of course no one could have "prevented" this, but could someone possibly have saved a few lives by stopping him?
If there had been a couple cops or security guards in the theater, you would argue they had no chance at stopping him? Maybe not killing him but by returning fire maybe the shooter would have tried to get away or maybe shoot himself? Even with body armor, a head shot or even hitting him in the arm is going to slow his roll.
What then? not even try?

I wonder if it would be possible to start a thread about last night's disaster in Colorado and keep it on topic, instead of devolving into a gun control bitch fest like this one.
