But I you seem to be missing the point of the Facelift. Maybe it's just not for you, and that's ok.

But you seem to be missing the point of the Facelift.
I understand the point of it, but most people take a day off to climb as well. Ideally, that's why it's better to do multiple days there.
I'll probably do that when John gets older.

I went when my kid was 3, we picked up some trash and then I took him to swan slabs one day and puppy dome the next (after picking up trash on tenaya beach). He still talks about the trash pick up. Our family will be there in some configuration this year.

For those that are fortunate enough to live close enough to drive to the valley in a few hours and participate in Facelift, consider yourselves lucky. Since I heard about Facelift several years agot, I've wanted to attend. As it stands, with work committments, time off, family committments and the time of year it occurs, etc not to mention airfair, rental car et al, it doesn't pencil out. I'd even have to debate with myself if I could make it wether or not to bring a harness and shoes, as, IMHO, it ain't about climbing.
I guess I'm a selfish bastid, as I really haven't done that much volunteer work. What little I have done, I've always fealt that I got so much more out of it than I put in, and I'm not talking about goodies or giveaways.

I want you all to know when it came time to shovel dirt onto Jeff, I picked out the small shovel. Not the large one.

Look through your posts. Notice your last few have not included the word "F#@ck!
Trying to talk to a person who is using this word is a waste of time, I have found.
Props.

My good buddy bluering, having a totally miserable time volunteering at the 2010 FaceLift. (I'd just gotten him to admit that he's a registered Democrat, and then we waterboarded Fatty.) IIRC, the BBQ that he, FatToad and JE put on raised a couple hundred dollars for the YCA - which definitely counts as a volunteer contribution if I'm keeping score. They gave me the money to put in the donation jar the next day, and it got counted.
Not that anyone is keeping score - it's an honour system. And in any case, even the ringleader of the whole event probably doesn't pick up a scrap of garbage. Not one. Does that make Ken public enemy #1, or a non-volunteer? Didn't think so.

I'll never forget the answer I got after asking ontheedge's kid what he was going ot do one morning @ Facekiift;
"We're goin' to the meadows!"
I found it a great bonding experiece with my daughter, though she was older, in her teens, by then. She really dug walking around picking up trash!

We don't give kids a job. We keep them totally dependent.
What a treat to be able to contribute! It is like....maybe...........having some control over your life for the first time?
Y'all remember what an unforgettable feeling that was.

What is the definition of grifter?
"I HATE volunteering for garbage pickup at the Facelift. I do it privately all the time, on every outing in Yosemite, or wherever. The main reason I attend Facelift is THE FREE CAMPING (because getting a site in the Valley is VERY hard nowadays even if you wanna pay, which I'm willing to do. It ain't a money thing. It's site availability thing.)"
Any questions?
Bwahahahaha!!!!
sorry.. my perspective on the rantings of one blew over the kooks nest is such that I cannot see him pulling his foot out of his mouth for a very long time, maybe I'm the only crazy person who reads him this way, but man....

Jingy, it's quite apparent that you only leg-hump me to try to disparage me. And it is a f*#king free-country, so continue on.
I do, however, have an equal right to tell you to f*#k off and get some semblance of a life. This is getting tiresome, and you're starting to really piss me off.
The next time you want some chow or free beers? Maybe look to some other person who is less 'selfish' as myself.
Ungrateful prick!
EDIT:
What is the definition of grifter?
So I'm a grifter now??? Grifters don't feed a campsite full of people for free and then donate tips to the YCA, do they?
Dipsh#t.

Don't get to hot there nancy
I, like you, bring my own. Yes, when sushifest happened at facelift I ,like you, paid my way and more in order to show my appreciation for the truly great food that Nature was preparing for us all.
For the record, I don't really care if your a grifter blew. You're like the face of America.. in the south.
Cheers

I don't know what you're talking about, I've never eating Doug's sushi. Nothing personal. I just don't like sushi.
I'm like the South? WTF does that mean? I'm a retard? Backwards-ass?
What?

Gosh how many years have we had going one of the biggest and most enjoyable volunteer efforts in the country. Is it really necessary that we let go of this very positive experience because the country and especially the NPS are under economic pressure? When times are tough and there are ever fewer things to feel hopeful about, that's when we need to fight harder and hold on tighter. Where am I wrong on this?
This exchange is not helping us. I think we need to let it die a natural death. Can we do that? We are the ones who will lose something.

Hope to see you there.
The "three hours of work/day camping" thing seems very likely to be a requirement of the NPS bureaucracy. It's not the sort of thing that Ken seems very keen on. Why get all fussed up about it?

Just an appreciation too seldom expressed. Pinky Lee and her coworkers pick up C4 360 days out of the year. Their great effort is much on my mind the very few days I am out there picking up.
Whenever I thank one of my friends here down south, he replies
"It's the least I could do. If I could do any less - I would."
What we do for C4 is not much compared to what is done by the big guys who are there all year long.
