I once had a profound religious experience that impacted my life for many years. I may have told of this before.

As a young man, I wandered aimlessly trying to find myself. One day I found myself in a small town on Sand Mountain in Alabama, where I engaged in courtship of a local preacher's daughter. Lovely lass she was.

One Sunday, I was invited over for a chicken dinner. Present were the preacher, his wife, the daughter, and the church deacons and their wives. I must admit to feeling tense in such an uptight gathering as we sat down at the heavily laden dinner table.

The daughter was wearing a lowcut dress and when she leaned over the table to pass the biscuits, one of her lovely breasts popped right out. Everyone's mouth flew open and faces turned bright red. Hoping to divert attention from this delicious spectacle, I shouted the first thing that came to mind, "Quick! Look over there, out the window!"

Everyone ran to the windows and looked out and there on the lawn were two dogs fu*king.

Just another atheist African Jew who lives in the heart of Mormondom checking in...

(ancestors on my mother's side are Sephardi from Morocco)

Don't have much to say about Mormons other than in their pursuit of heaven they tend to make life hell for the rest of us.

Carry on!

Kon Tiki is indeed a very good read, and a great adventure story.
But there is very little evidence to support his theories that South Americans populated at least some of the islands of Polynesia. Too bad, as it would be a great story if true.

A long time ago a wise Persian king gave refuge to a Jewish community that honored him in return. Too bad there are so many ignorant or historically amnesiac persons about.
Jews and Muslims have largely lived peacefully, but you sure hear about it the relatively few times when they don't.

Yo! Fat. Lots of these funky haired TV preachers have crusades.
Probably about for the same reason as the originals. To relieve poor folks of the burden of carrying too much weight in their purses. Gettin' hernias and such.

Brian, interesting links, thanks.

Stevep, "But there is very little evidence to support his theories that South Americans populated at least some of the islands of Polynesia. Too bad, as it would be a great story if true."

Is there nothing in your life that you "believe" to be true or right, that you don't have absolute certain proof of its being correct? Do you not have any friends or neighbors that you believe to be good honest people, but when it really comes down to it, you really have no idea?

I hope your unwillingness to have faith is only geared toward the LDS church.

"Is there nothing in your life....."

Those are two very different propositions. Having faith in the qualities of your friends and neighbours is a very different thing from accepting on faith a statement that purports to be historical fact. Especially when the evidence to support that "fact" is slim at best. This sort of thinking has had horrible consequences throughout human history. Hell, were seeing the consequences of it right now in Iraq.

While working today, I was thinking about how some have expressed anger and bitterness in this thread toward the LDS church for do proxy baptisms for the dead.

I was wandering why this bothers some so much?

If your someone that thinks it's all hooky and God is a myth, than what harm has been done to the deceased. If your spiritual, or religious, and it's different from your personal beliefs, then you believe that it's hooky as well. Again, what harm has been done. Is the problem that their name was used in a prayer.

I personally would welcome any prayer, blessing, kind words or thoughts, and good energy, sent my way, from any person, from any culture, with any spiritual or atheist belief before and after my death.

My mother drove me and my siblings to school every morning for I don't know, 17 years or something. After I graduated from college, I spent a bit of time substitute teaching at my middle/high school - and she still drove me to work every morning. When I was taking undergraduate classes last year to make up some prereqs for vet school, she drove me every morning (and I am 30). She's a good chauffer.

Werner, it's a LDS ceremony where someone is baptized in place of a deceased person. It's believed that this (the deceased) person will then have the opportunity to except it or reject it when the time matters.
